25th Celiac Disease Conference – Nationwide Children’s Hospital November 3rd

November 3, 2012 is sure to be an exciting day at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.  The Annual Celiac Disease Conference is marking its 25th Anniversary that day!  The conference begins at 8:00 AM and runs until 3:30 PM and will be packed full of gluten-free vendors, samples and speakers!  Read below for more information on the speakers.

Prof. Carlo Catassi, MD, MPH
Professor Catassi is with Clinica Pediatrica at the Univesita Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona, Italy. Dividing his time between Europe and the USA, he is also Co-Director with Alessio Fasano, MD, of the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, in Baltimore.

Carol Fenster
What began nearly 20 years ago as a solution to Carol’s own gluten intolerance grew into a thriving position as a leading expert on gluten-free cooking. The author of gluten-free cooksbooks, she also develops gluten-free products for leading manufacturers and consults worldwide on issues related to gluten-free cooking. Carol is a guest speaker at domestic and international forums and she has appeared in "Food for Life" on the Health Network and "Creative Living" on PBS. Her books are endorsed and sold by leading organizations such as the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN), Gluten Intolerance Group, Celiac Disease Foundation and local chapters of the Celiac Sprue Association. She is a fomer Associate Food Editor of Living Without magazine.

Jolanda Denham, MD
Jolanda M. Denham (White), MD, is a physician in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Denham’s clinical interests involve all aspects of pediatric gastroenterology, with a special interest in nutritional disorders. She serves as the Medical Director for the annual Celiac conference.

Amy Jones, MS, Rd, LD
Amy is a clinical dietician at Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine, OH and clinical liaison for the Logan County Celiac Support Group.

Anne Roland Lee, MSEd, RD, LD
Anne is the Director of Nutritional Services at Schar USA. Previously she was the nutritionist at the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University. She is an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico in the Nutrition Department. Anne is involved in consumer education, research, and at the same time pursuing a doctoral degree. Her research has resulted in published articles and texts on the effect of a gluten-free diet on the quality of life, nutritional adequacy of the GF diet and the economic impact of the diet.

Steve Plogsted
Steve is a pharmacist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital who has taken a special interest in the prescription and over the counter medication needs of celiac disease. Steve’s medication update has become a favorite among conference participants. He has spoken at numerous regional and national conferences on the topic of medication and the celiac patient.

Mary Kay Sharrett, MS,RD, LD, CNSD
Mary Kay is a clinical dietician at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and an expert on the gluten-free diet. She has served on the conference planning committee since inception and is the clinical liaison to the GlutenFree Gang Celiac Support Group in Columbus, OH. She is a popular speaker at national and regional conferences and a favorite interview among the popular press.

The conference isn’t just for adults, there are also activities for school-age children and teens with Celiac Disease.  The fee is $45/person and everyone must pre-register.  Registration fee includes education materials, activities, gluten-free lunch and exhibits.  There will be a limited number of Gluten-Free Shoppers only registrations ($10.00) accepted.  These registrants will only have access to the vendors after 1:30 PM.  I had the opportunity to attend this conference a couple of years back and I was impressed with the amount of information and new-to-me gluten-free food ready for sampling. 

Nationwide Children’s Hospital is located close to downtown Columbus, Ohio.  The newly expanded campus is the largest pediatric expansion in the country.  Ever.  They ranked 5th in the specialty ranking of Gastroenterology in the Honor Roll List of U.S. News and World’s report on Best Children’s Hospitals 2012 – 2013.
