Some of you may have already heard this familiar story, but awhile back two workers at Betty Crocker discovered that they needed to switch to a gluten free diet after a Celiac diagnosis, their company started a long process to produce a variety of gluten free desserts for the general public, using the reasoning that no one should ever have to go without a birthday cake.
The entire process took awhile, including setting up a gluten free processing facility and finding a good tasting product, but as of this June 2009, Betty Crocker has at least four gluten free mixes available. Due to the costs involved, it looks like they cost roughly $2.00 more per package than their gluten-filled counterparts, but these prices are something the Celiac community is used to and shouldn’t keep them from selling.
For your reference, here are the gluten free mixes which Betty Crocker offers.

They’ve been out in most grocery stores for over a month now. Has anyone had a chance to try these yet?

My wife and I tried the cookies. They still have a bit of a crumbly, gritty texture. They are, however, the best cookie “mix” that we’ve tried. By far. We have a good recipe for homemade cookies, but it requires freezing the dough and very careful preparation, so it’s a 10+hour ordeal. The mix? About 20 minutes to warm cookies.
Although that sounds like a lot of preparation, this is GREAT to hear. If these mixes are good, that will help encourage competitors to create their own mixes for the Celiac community.
if done right, people will gladly pay (myself included!)
I’ve tried the Brownies and they are VERY good. So easy to make – and I like EASY. Looking forward to trying all the mixes.
More great news! Glad to hear the brownies were easy, as the cookies are apparently time consuming to make.
The best Gluten Free Mixes are Made in Australia, they are Well and Good Gluten Free Range…. Very easy to make and moist. I make them often…. Would like to try and compare the two.
I have tried the chocolate chip cookie mix. However, I did not freeze the dough. Maybe I didnt read the full directions, but I don’t remember seeing that on the box. They turned out fine to me, maybe a little flat. I just made sure not to cook them too long so they weren’t crunchy. I like my cookies soft. I was surprised. I thought they were great!
I have found the mixes at Kroger in Atlanta on the “regular” baking goods isle and the chocolate cookie mix makes the best cookies that I have eaten in 5 years! Simple to make and then hot chocolate chip cookies from the oven! Go Betty Crocker!
