Boar’s Head: All gluten-free and some nitrate-free

Having recently been a non-meat eater, this is an unusual topic for me to post about.  I slowly started getting back into the meat scene after having my options limited with gluten.  It can be tough at a get together when gluten and meat are out of the picture, and you are starving!  I started giving in and eating some meat here or there.  My daughter is also newly discovering it since we never had meat around, and has been asking me for it recently to have in her lunch like many of the other kids in school.

I remember back in the day when I lived in Manhattan, and I would love to grab a sandwich from the corner deli on the way home from work, a huge turkey and muenster cheese sandwich made of Boar’s Head meat and cheese.   And then I started to crave that combination again.  However, this time it would need to be on gluten-free bread, of course.  It seemed like Boar’s Head is easy to find here, in Atlanta, at Publix grocery stores, so I figured this is what I will get for my daughter and myself.

Thankfully, Boar’s Head products are all 100% gluten-free, including all meats, cheeses and condiments.  So, I have that taken care of, but what about nitrate-free?  For my daughter, I want to be sure I can give her something with the least amount of processing, preservatives and chemicals, so this is important to me. Personally I really like their All-Natural line which is all nitrate-free and raised without the use of antibiotics and hormones. My favorite is the All Natural French Country Turkey Breast and All Natural Cap-Off Top Round Oven Roasted Beef.

One of my new favorite sandwiches is using Boar’s Head All Natural Cap-Off Top Round Oven Roasted Beef with their Pub Style Horseradish Sauce, cheddar and arugula on a gluten-free bun.

After contacting the people at Boar’s Head, they responded to me with a list of exactly which of their products have no preservative and no added nitrates:

The very first time I heard gluten-free in a radio commercial, it was for Boar’s Head meats. I love their Ovengold Roast Turkey ;)

My kids enjoy Boar’s Head meats, but a while back we were reminded of one issue to be wary of: when the GF Boar’s Head is sliced in the gluten-filled deli on the gluten cc’d slicer. :-( We had better luck with Boar’s Head products that were packaged by the company and that we sliced at home.

  3. That all natural top round roast beef sounds like something I need to try! I can always tell when I’ve eaten nitrates because my joints ache. Thanks for the good sandwich ideas.
