Celiac Disease Awareness in East Africa

I’ve often heard complaints over the past decade of the lack of awareness for Celiac Disease here in the United States.   Though the complaint is valid, and things are improving here at a fairly rapid pace, by comparison to East Africa those in the United States have it very good!

While doing my nightly surfing of the internet recently I came across a post on Celiac.com about Celiac awareness in Africa, which tells the story of a young man named Mike who is lucky to be alive as someone who is both lactose-intolerant and suffering from Celiac Disease in East Africa:

Had Mike been born in a poor family, Mike would have eventually lost his life to celiac disease, just like the increasingly shocking numbers of African infants between the very minor age of 6 months and 4 years that die every year—particularly in the East-African region. The acute lack of awareness and subtle ignorance about the disease leads the devastated parents to think that sorcery or envious neighbors robbed them of their little ones.

The story goes on to cover Mike’s additional lactose intolerance, which has made things even more difficult for him.

Of course this isn’t true for all of Africa, but it looks like there are some areas that could really benefit from raised awareness.
