If you’ve been reading this site for awhile, you may remember we discussed a Celiac home test that was in the works last October. Well, it looks like just recently this new Celiac Disease home test became available in Canada at London Drugs, Rexall Pharma Plus, and other major Canadian retail chains!
If you are wondering what exactly this test is good for, here is some additional information provided by Celiac.com:
The test tells users with a high degree of accuracy that they are either negative, developing celiac disease, or already have celiac disease. In the last two cases, the specially formulated Canadian kit encourages people to consult a physician for confirmation, which usually involves a biopsy of the small bowel.
I have mixed feelings about this test, as I feel that peope who “self-diagnose” using an at home test may run into problems, as they won’t have a doctor’s guideance. Hopefully people don’t use this test to diagnose, but instead use it to determine if they need an endoscopy and a dietician, etc.
What do you think?

Hi,
I’ve read a bunch of the research that’s been published on the Biocard test and it is actually pretty remarkable.
One of the most common complaints is that people can’t get their doctors to test them. The Biocard Celiac Test Kit fixes this problem by giving people an at-home test that measures (anti-tTG) IgA antibodies from a fingertip blood sample. If the test comes out positive for celiac disease, the makers of the test recommend consulting with a doctor to confirm the diagnosis. They are actually really clear about this both in the instructions and in the video you can watch on their website. http://celiachometest.com/en/test/video/
Also, a study published in the British Medical Journal found that the simple rapid antibody test allowed nurses working in primary care medical offices to detect celiac disease in patients who were not picked up during routine clinical care. The study evaluated 2,690 children around six years old and 120 nurses. The study found 31 newly diagnosed celiac patients. The rapid test accurately detected celiac disease in 30 of the 31 patients. Those are pretty good results.
I really think that the Biocard Celiac Test is a landmark development for the entire celiac community. It is the first time that patients will have immediate access to find out if they have celiac, especially amongst people who have family members with the disease and can’t convince their doctor to test them.
0-14 years (1983-1997) I had stunted growth and diarrhea/eczema every day. The gastros and GP’s kept telling me that I had IBS and ignored the fact that something was quite obviously very very wrong.
Finally my mother got tested and came up positive for IgA auto-antibodies, so the whole family went GF. For me the GF-diet was a miracle, I practically changed overnight form being chronically Ill to perfect health.
This test kit will save lives.
