Dairy and Gluten-free Cookie Dough Frozen Dessert

PD_CookieDoughPurely Decadent makes several allergen friendly frozen desserts. Even so, imagine my surprise when I saw a container in the freezer at Publix marked gluten-free AND ‘Cooke Dough’! I would never think to look at a cookie dough frozen dessert, because I would assume it contains cookie dough made with wheat flour. Clearly, one can’t make assumptions about what is generally considered gluten-free these days.

This Purely Decadent item is not new, just new to me, but there are bound to be a few gluten-free dairy eaters out there that don’t know about it. Since I’m rarely am on the lookout for dairy free treats, it was just a fluke that I ran across this interesting find. I was actually looking for orange gelato by Talenti when I noticed the gluten-free marking on the front of the Purely Decadent container.

The Cookie Dough frozen dessert contains coconut and soy but the container is marked gluten-free, dairy free, wheat free and lactose free. This is not a product review because I didn’t buy the product. Cookie dough ice cream never appealed to me, and ice cream in general is doesn’t rank high on my list of treats.

Purely Decadent seems to have a very good system in place, to keep their products safe from contamination by the allergens they process in their facility. The website contains a thorough explanation of the steps they take to this end. Reading this information in full might alleviate the fears of some that think there is no such thing as safe foods that are not made in dedicated gluten-free facilities. According to the company’s website, a huge amount of our population doesn’t digest lactose well. I wonder if they all know it.

Website Excerpt:

Recent data indicates that at least 40 million Americans are lactose intolerant, and many others have reduced or eliminated their dairy intake for religious, philosophical or health reasons. Should all these people have to go through life without delicious ice cream, creamy yogurt and other dairy based foods? Here at Turtle Mountain, we don’t think so. We have developed a wide range of exceptionally flavored products which provide a wonderfully satisfying experience without the problems associated with cows’ milk.

The So Delicious frozen desserts from this company are made with soy milk and the Purely Decadent treats are made with coconut milk. We’d love to know what you think about this product if you’re tried it before. There are several gluten-free frozen desserts available from Purely Decadent. Here is the complete list.

Hi Tiffany! I am gluten-intolerant, and I LOVE Purely Decadent! They actually make this cookie dough flavor in both soy (as pictured) and also in a coconut milk-based variety (which comes in a white container). Both are really incredible. My kids love it, too!

  2. So glad to heat it Jacqueline! I’ve seen some mixed reviews online for the coconut milk version of this product. The photo I took at the store came out blurry but the container was white, as you said. I’m thinking if one likes cookie dough ice cream, they will enjoy these treats!

  3. I also have had the cookie dough in both the regular and coconut milk varieties. They were both excellent. I actually preferred the coconut milk-it was VERY creamy and rich, and the cookie tasted like-well-cookie dough!

  4. Joyce says:

I was reading the ingredients on this Purely Decadent Cookie Dough frozen dessert and noticed the ingredient Brown Rice Syrup. I have read several places that Brown Rice Syrup is mostly made from barley, therefore, it would not be gluten-free.
If a company lists a product as “gluten-free” is it safe to assume that the Brown Rice Syrup is made from something other than barley?

  5. Yes Joyce, brown rice syrup is often used in gluten-free products and when it is, it is of course not made from barley. It’s hard to find brown rice syrup that is not gluten-free these days. The most common use I’ve seen for this syrup is in gluten-free cereals.

Dave, I doubt very much if you will find,( I presume that the ice cream you are speaking about is sugar free,) this brand of ice cream in Oz, in fact I’d say you have nil chance.

An addition to the above message for Dave

Coles supermarkets, I presume Woolworth’s too have a very nice non-dairy ice cream. No idea however of the sugar content. If you can’t get it, get one of the indepenants to get it for you. IGA of Frankins will do so,

Otherwise make it, it’s so easy and much nicer
