Domino’s Pizza Offering Gluten-Free Pizzas?

Pizza has always been my favorite food and since I started the gluten-free diet, I’ve struggled to find a tasty pizza that meets my high standards.   I’ve found several crusts which are edible, but I’m still on a quest to find a truly good gluten-free pizza that tastes on par with its gluten-filled counterpart.

Some encouraging news over the past couple months has been a growing number of large pizza chains which are at least attempting to find a gluten-free pizza to offer their customers.   Though it wasn’t particularly good, a few weeks ago I wrote about the Godfather’s gluten-free pizzas which was a solid step in the right direction (I will still be buying them every month to support Godfather’s attempts).

Today I ran across more exciting news as an international pizza chain, Domino’s Pizza, apparently is also making an effort to offer a gluten-free pizza to their customers!  According to Franchising, it looks like gluten-free pizzas are currently available throughout Australia, but no mention is made as to whether this will be expanded to the United States and other countries with Domino’s Pizza locations:

Domino’s CEO, Don Meij said the introduction of gluten free pizzas was a direct response to customers who enjoy pizza but are gluten intolerant.

“We already have a vast majority of ingredients which are gluten free, but until now customers who are intolerant to wheat gluten weren’t able to create a pizza they would enjoy,” he said. “Now with the gluten free pizza bases, we have 13 pizza varieties which when paired with the new gluten free base are suitable for coeliacs.”

Gluten intolerant customers also have the option of designing their own pizza.

According to the article, how it works is gluten free pizza bases can be ordered by the customers as an alternative base option for a particular pizza.  Customers can then choose from the following flavors: Chilli Prawn, Garlic Prawn, Spinach and Feta, Toni Pepperoni, The Godfather, Margarita, Simply Cheese, Vengorama, Veg Trio, Chicken and Feta, Chicken Italiano, Chicken Manaco or Creamy Chicken and Cherry Tomato.

It appears Domino’s Pizza has also put a lot of work into adjusting their existing ingredients to make many naturally be gluten-free, so there is a lot of encouraging news in this article.   How exciting would it be if Domino’s Pizza offered a gluten-free pizza?

  1. Someone I know in the restaurant business told me six months ago that a major U.S. chain would be introducting a gluten-free pizza in the next year. That means it would be within another six months – assuming their info was correct. It is likely Domino’s. While I didn’t eat their gluten pizzas, it would be nice for people who liked it to be able to get a gluten-free pizza there. And of course one large chain doing it leads to the others following suit. That is the BEST part of the news to me!

  2. Mike says:

Anyone found anywhere in the United States that carry’s it?

  3. Mike – according to Dominos in the US.., they have no plans to offer gf pizza but I say anything is possible with our ever exploding market ;)

  4. Amy Backs says:

There will be a cross-contamination issue!! Also, I’m allergic to soy and Dominos GF bases in Australia have SOY FLOUR in them. I hate being allergic to soy as well as coeliac. I HATE IT!!! Dominos really need to consider that many coeliacs have to avoid more than just gluten. I think they are way out of date with their market!!
