It is now the season for giving and there is only about one week left to make charitable contributions and get tax credits for 2009. What better way to give than to help out your favorite gluten-free organizations? This list is not conclusive but it includes some of the most well known celiac centers and celiac organizations. Your donation should be tax deductible so you’re helping your gluten-free community and getting something back. It’s a win-win situation for everyone!

If you want to help out the new gluten-free food bank in Colorado, started by Gluten Free Dee, you can make a monetary donation to the House of Neighborly Service with a note “GF Food Bank” on it. You can also have your favorite gluten-free products shipped to the food bank by ordering them online and then using the food bank address for the shipment instead of yours. Please note that due to this being a brand new project, the 501(c)3 non-profit status for the gluten-free part of the food bank will not be in effect until some time in January 2010.

If there is a local celiac or gluten-free support group in your area, part of their membership fee might be tax deductible. The group has to be set up as a non-profit organization in order for any part of dues to be tax deductible. Check with your local group’s organizer to find out if any part of their dues are tax deductible. If you have not joined your local group yet, this is the perfect time of the year to look into doing it. You might be able to write off part of your membership dues and in turn, help your local gluten-free community in the process!

This article is definitely in the holiday spirit Tiffany! I think it is important to donate to at least 1-2 of these every year around Christmas, even if it is only a few dollars or whatever can be spared. Between gift baskets, research, and lobbying for the needs of celiacs nationwide, these companies all fill a vital role in bettering our lives and the lives of others in our celiac community!
