Examining Thyroid Disease Risks in People with Celiac Disease

I just noticed a study was published over at the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism regarding an increased risk of Thyroid Disease in people who have Celiac Disease, and figured I would share the results with our readers.

The study examined over 14,000 individuals with Celiac Disease.  Analyses were restricted to individuals with a follow-up of more than 1 year and with no thyroid disease before study entry or within 1 year after the study entry.

According to the results posted, it looks like Celiac Disease was positively associated with Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism, and the highest risk estimates were found in children.

Here is the conclusion to the study that was posted:

Conclusion: Celiac disease is associated with thyroid disease, and these associations were seen regardless of temporal sequence. This indicates shared etiology and that these individuals are more susceptible to autoimmune disease.

I know that I’ve seen a large number of message board posts over the past couple years covering this topic and there has long been a belief that the two are linked, but I believe this might be the closest I’ve seen to actual confirmation.
