I was recently sent complimentary samples of a new pasta (new to me) from Farmo, which is located in Milan, Italy. Since I love pasta it was a real treat to open a box from the mailman full of pasta. And since the Italians know how to make pasta I was really looking forward to tasting this. I have spent much time in Italy, and of course one of its greatest wonders is the food!
Since starting my gluten-free life, my favorite pastas have been Cornito and Le Veneziane, both corn pastas, with Le Veneziane being from Italy and Cornito being from Hungary.
I decided to make the pasta that night and make something that really allowed me to taste the pasta. I liked that the pasta did not need to be rinsed, because to me, that ends up being a lukewarm and slippery meal. I ended up making a very simple dish….I drained the pasta and tossed it with olive oil, fresh ground pepper and chopped parsley. I then served it with freshly grated Parmesan cheese at the table. The pasta has a yellow-ish color, which reflects the corn and tasted fantastic. It tastes just like the pasta that I miss.
I had seconds and my husband, who is usually not a fan of pasta without some sort of sauce, but he really enjoyed it and had thirds! My daughter quickly finished her dinner as well. I was really impressed and look forward to trying another package of pasta this week. This time I think I will make a pasta alla vodka with broccoli with their penne.
I had the opportunity to see them at last weekend’s Gluten-Free Vendor Fair in Atlanta, where they were also sampling savory bread sticks and other non-pasta items. Again, the breadsticks were very good. They have a pretty expanded product list outside of pasta, but it seems they are not yet available in the United States. This includes a kids line of gluten-free pasta, baking mixes and snacks. Farmo products are made in a dedicated gluten-free facility.
Farmo is currently only available in select areas, but will hopefully spread throughout the rest of the country, and with how good it is, I bet they will. They are currently available at Earth Fare in the southeast and Return to Eden in Atlanta.
In looking at Amazon.com, it looks like they will soon carry Farmo and if you are interested in having it carried in your area, request it from your local grocery or specialty foods store and with enough requests, it will hopefully increase distribution. I am definitely a fan.
