Gluten-free Pizza Options Continue to Expand in Atlanta

Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza at Blue Moon

Being able to have gluten-free pizza when dining out is a treat to say the least. There are several places that serve gluten-free pizza in the Atlanta area. Most of the pizza crusts are made hundreds of miles away and frozen before arriving at the local pizza joints that sell gluten-free pizza here. That is because most places don’t have a safe space to make fresh gluten-free crusts in house. When my pizza place ran out of gluten-free crusts and made some up (only once and very carefully) from gluten-free flour, it was the closest thing to NYC quality gluten-free pizza I’ve had to date. The place used Domata crusts and the flour they used was from Domata as well. Those pizzas were 15” and were large enough for two people to share. When the tiny 10” crusts arrived back in stock, we went back to eating the frozen crusts.

Several months ago our own Anne Steib visited Atlanta and had gluten-free pizza at Blue Moon Pizza in Vinings, GA. Until she told me about the place I’d not heard of it and did not know they sold gluten-free pizza. You can read Anne’s thoughts about the pizza at Blue Moon here. Blue Moon had been a good friend of mine’s go-to pizza place when she ate gluten, and she was thrilled to find out they now had gluten-free pizza. She went straight away and said it was the best gluten-free pizza she’d had here. It took me a while but I finally got over there myself last month. The gluten-free crust at Blue Moon is the closest thing to a gluten crust I’ve had in Atlanta.

Cheesy Bread at Blue Moon

Though the gluten-free crust served at Blue Moon is frozen, it tastes fresh and there is no odd texture to it what-so-ever. It is almost as good at the fresh crust at Mozzarelli’s in NYC. The cheesy bread they serve at Blue Moon is fabulous. It’s sort of like a pizza with garlic sauce and tons of cheese. At Blue Moon the upcharge for the gluten-free crust is $3. The base price before the upcharge is the 10” pizza price on the menu. However, the crust I’ve been served there is larger than 10”.

The entrée salads at the restaurant are served on a pizza crust so those can be served with gluten-free pizza upon request. The $3 upcharge applies to the cheesy bread, pizza and entrée salad since the same size crust is used for all three menu items. There is a gluten-free blondie brownie dessert at Blue Moon that others rave about. After having cheesy bread and pizza I certainly don’t have room for a dessert so we’ve never ordered the blondie. The Blue Moon location in Marietta recently began offering gluten-free pizza and the company might expand in the area this year.
