Le Veneziane Gluten-Free Pasta

One of the first things we miss when going gluten-free is pasta. Automatically, it seems that even if we didn’t love pasta before, we want what we can’t have now. There are many gluten-free pastas out there with slightly different tastes and textures, and it seems everyone has a different favorite.  Typically gluten-free pastas are made of white or brown rice flour, however, it is becoming more common to see gluten-free pasta made with diverse ingredients, such as corn, quinoa, buckwheat, even pasta made with bean flour.

Usually, I go with Tinkyada pasta as it holds up really well, and works nicely in basked dishes and pasta salads. Generally no one can really tell the difference.  It is my standard go-to pasta, and the one most readily available in most grocery stores.

However, a couple of months ago, while shopping at the Gluten-Free Trading Company in Milwaukee, I asked what they felt was the most popular and best tasting pasta.  They recommended Le Veneziane, which is imported from Italy and 100% corn pasta.  I figured the Italians know how to make pasta, so I would give it a try.  This pasta is also vegan, soy- and dairy-free.  I was a bit skeptical it would taste very corn-like, but I was proven wrong.

I made the fettucini tonight with a light wine cream sauce with sauteed broccoli, and if I didn’t make the pasta myself, I would of had to double-check the pasta box to be sure it was indeed gluten-free.  The texture, the taste, it was just like regular fettucini from my pre-gluten days.  My gluten-eating husband could not even tell the difference.  I could have just eaten it plain with olive oil and some fresh parmesan cheese, it was that good.

I will definitely go back this brand, and try the other styles. I have definitely found my new favorite gluten-free pasta!  It is also available in bulk from other online retailers, including Quattrobimbi and Amazon.

Excellent timing with this post Anne! I’ve always just used Tinkyada because it tastes pretty good and my wife and kids seem fine with it, but about a month ago Tiffany Janes recommended some of the newer brands, so trying some new pastas are in the plans. I just used up the last of the Tinkyada pasta last Sunday, so based upon your recommended, I will give La Veneziane a try first!

Edit: I wasn’t able to locate LV at any of the local stores so I ended up picking up some Schar which I tried last night and it was acceptable but nothing to get excited about. When I got home I did some online searching and as you mentioned, I found LV is available on Amazon for a competitive price, so I will order some from Amazon next time I place an order there (within a week or two) and leave a follow up comment.

  2. Since I had to order some gf tortillas from GF Trading Company, I added this fettucini to my order. I also do not care for the plain 100% corn pastas I’ve tried, which is why I’ve neglected to try this brand before. My fave pasta is a quinoa/rice blend (Andeam Dream), but that line doesn’t offer a fettucini. I’ll post back later how I like the LV brand. Thanks for the thorough review!

Looking forward to your thoughts Tiffany!

    • OK – I take bad every bad thing I’ve ever said about corn pasta. Italian corn pasta is nothing like the pasta made with Amercian grown corn….the difference is like night and day! Since Anne reviewed Le Veneziane on this site, I reviewed it on the Triumph Dinings site. The pasta is absolutely incredible and we will keep it on hand from now on! Thanks for convincing me to try it Anne ;)

I couldn’t agree more! Just stocked up when I had a $70.00 order of Le Veneziane delivered last week after finally trying it. Currently it isn’t sold anywhere in my area (yet), so I had to order it online, but i’m set for quite awhile now. Since I buy it in bulk, it isn’t a big deal to buy it online right now. Just wish they offered lasagna noodles. Currently the only option I have is the Tinkyada lasagna noodles.

        • I agree….would LOVE an excellent tasting lasagna noodle. Tinkyada is fine and much better than the DeBoles brand (to us anyway) but I’d love a truly wonderful noodle now that I make lasanga at home.
