Though that hasn’t always been the case, over recent years Celiac Awareness Month was moved to the month of May (previously it was October) in order to be consistent with digestive disease month. So, what does that mean for those of us who suffer from Celiac Disease?
It is really a personal choice as far as what you want to do, but the best thing you can do (in my opinion) is to just go out and try to raise awareness in your area. The more people who understand what the disease is, the less questions you will have to answer whenever you are out in public eating, shopping, or whatever. Once Celiac Disease is a household term, there won’t be nearly as much explanation necessary!
You can also take part in one of the many events planned to improve Celiac awareness if there is one happening in your area. According to the ACDA, here are the events scheduled for this amount (I am a little late writing this post so a few have already happened):
May 2
- Celiac Disease Foundation’s Annual Conference
May 3
- University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research
- International Walk for Celiac Disease – Baltimore
- Chef to Plate – National restaurant awareness campaign sponsored by the Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) and supported by the ACDA. Information about celiac disease will be displayed on patron tables at participating restaurants.
May 15
- Chip In for Celiac Disease Golf Tournament – Montroe, CT
May 16
- Making Tracks for Celiacs - Buffalo (NY), Plano, TX, Mansfield (OH), Victoria, MN
- Moving Feet Without Wheat – Dallas, TX
May 28
- Making Tracks for Celiacs – Sarasota, FL
May 30
- Making Tracks for Celiacs – Syracuse (NY)
May 31
- Making Tracks for Celiacs – Grosse Pointe (MI)
May 25 – 31
- National Dough Rai$er for Celiac Awareness
What do you have planned for this month to help raise Celiac awareness?
Update: We also received a reminder that May is also Celiac awareness month for Canada as well, and they also have some events taking place. Here is the information I received from Lynda with the Canadian Celiac Association:
Thanks for your feeds on May awareness and AU celiac conference – don’t forget up here in Canada we celebrate Celiac Awareness in May and our National Conference is May 29-31th in Waterloo, Ontario. This is pretty close to US states around the Ontario provincial border. Lynda Board of Directors Vancouver Chapter Canadian Celiac Association
