Molly’s Gluten-Free Bakery in Wisconsin

On our requisite annual trip north to go apple and pumpkin picking, we found ourselves in Pewaukee, Wisconsin.  While we were driving, I remembered about a bakery I have heard so much about from a fellow gluten-free eater.  Thankfully, I had my iPhone, and remembered the name, Molly’s Gluten-Free Bakery.  I looked them up, and lucky for me, we were only 5 miles away.  We had to go!  Molly’s is located about 30 miles west of Milwaukee, on the picturesque Old Lynndale Farm just off of highway 16.

Molly’s is located inside an old, rehabbed barn and would definitely not be a place one would just come across by chance.  The employees were extremely welcoming as we walked in, and in the midst of putting together several bags full of gluten-free baked goods for the previous customers.  I let them know it was my first visit, and right away, my husband, my daughter and myself were offered several free samples.  We were able to taste the French bread, Italian herb bread, ancient grain bread, raisin bread, brownie and the chocolate chop cookie.  I was thoroughly impressed by them all, as were my gluten-able family.  Molly’s is a 100% gluten and nut-free bakery.  They assured me the entire facility is gluten-free that no gluten is allowed on the premises for anyone.

I decided to go for the French bread loaf, hamburger buns, a gingerbread man and lemon bars.  I must admit that lemon bars are one thing I have to try from every bakery, they are my guilty pleasure!  I knew the French bread would be gone within a week, so I left it in the fridge, rather than the freezer, where I would usually put my gluten-free bread being that it is preservative-free.

I was right; the French bread has almost disappeared.  I have been enjoying it slightly toasted with brie cheese and it just puts a huge smile on my face to be able to eat delicious French bread again with a flaky crust.  Last night for dinner, my family had the hamburger buns with gluten-free Sunshine burgers (my absolute favorite veggie burger), and these buns are my definite favorite!  I have tried gluten-free buns from many bakeries and stores, and these are by far the best!  They are amazingly light and fluffy with a flaky crust, and not too heavy as some tend to be.  They would also be tasty heated up with some warm butter and jam for breakfast.  The lemon bars and gingerbread man were eaten as soon as we got home that same night and were both equally delicious.  Again, the lemon bars being my favorite among other gluten-free versions I have tried.  They said their wedding cake cookies are one of their most popular, but by the time we arrived they were sold out for the day.

With the holidays coming up, they also had many special items available for order such as pies, holiday cookies and bread for stuffing.  They also offer pie crusts, special-order cakes, cutout cookies, dairy and egg-free baked goods, pizza crusts, bagels, cupcakes and more.

It is a bit of a drive, but was well worth it.  They even told me they get customers coming from out of state just to come to their bakery with a cooler to stock up.  Next time I am in Milwaukee, I will definitely be taking that detour.  They are closed Sundays, and do not ship.  However, they do take orders, so plan a drive up and they will have your treats waiting for you.

  1. What a fabulous find for you! Molly’s sounds like a place definitely worth a detour. It’s so funny how excited we can get over things like lemon bars and wedding cookies….lol! When I first spotted the gf wedding cake cookeis at the now closed gluten-free Great Harvest bakery in Chattanooga, I was overwhelmed with excitiement. To this day those cookies were the best version I’ve had, including gluten versions! Thanks for sharing your gluten-free bakery adventures with us – makes me want to go to Molly’s myself ;) .

This is awesome news Anne. That sounds like a small town area, so it is impressive that they can support an exclusively gluten-free bakery!
