If you had the opportunity earlier this year to try the Orange Valencia cake at Starbucks, then you most likely felt the disappointment when they pulled their gluten-free product from the stores only a short while after they were introduced. I remember the day clearly when I discovered the Orange Valencia cake at my local Starbucks and the excitement I felt when I first tried it. I know it was not loved by everyone, but I thought it was an amazing treat, and better than any of their gluten-filled items, as long as I ignored the calorie count. However, they did contain almonds, which can be a problem for many people.
After they pulled the cake from the stores, they began carrying Kind bars, which personally I love and get almost every time I get a drink. The mango macadamia nut being my favorite. Again, these contain nuts, and are not as dessert-like as the cake.
I recently discovered, without the same fanfare as the introduction of the Orange Valencia cake, Starbucks is once again tapping into the gluten-free market starting with select locations. This time it seems they are doing it under an initiative to promote low calorie snacks. To my surprise today, I noticed that my local Starbucks carried these new gluten-free treats, which include three different cookies by Lucy’s (chocolate chip, sugar and cinnamon thin cookies). These cookies contain gluten-free oats and are also milk, egg, peanut and tree nut-free and made with organic ingredients. They contain zero cholesterol and trans fats with 130 calories per serving. Each package includes 4 cookies. My daughter and I shared the cinnamon thins and really enjoyed them. They tasted like snickerdoodles with a slightly crumbly, but stable texture.
In addition to Lucy’s cookies, Starbucks is also carrying fruit leathers by Stretch Island Fruit Company, fruit snacks by Peeled Snacks, nut snacks by Sahale Snacks, crackers by FoodShouldTasteGood, gluten-free granola (blueberry and gojiberry) by Two Moms in the Raw and fruit puree pouches by Peter Rabbit Organics, which is great for kids! They also continue to carry Kind bars. All gluten-free snacks are individually packaged, under 220 calories per serving and priced affordably.
It seems they may be finally getting on the right track with this new variety of offerings for people who need to be cautious of not only gluten, but other allergens as well. It is also great that these new gluten-free snacks offer more nutrition than a sugar-filled cake. This makes me even more excited about being able to go somewhere mainstream and be able to order the same as my gluten-eating friends. Hopefully these will stick around longer than their first try.

I love the Cinnamon Thins from Lucy’s! If SB had introduced these items before the cake, it would have been a better move all around. At least for the many people that are interested in non pastry items, they have some great choices at SB now.
I agree, and because I love the cinnamon thins I had at Starbucks, I ended up buying a pack of them at the grocery store, so really it is great awareness for all the companies participating.
I really like the chocolate chip cookies by Lucy’s! I was very impressed with the price too, only $1.50 for 4 cookies, gluten-free, and in their own little package. Yippie!
All the Lucy’s cookies (except choco chip) will work great in the car emergency food kit I always have packed. The other day my husband was looking for something in my center storage console and he found a bag with about ten gf dressing packets it in. He said “exactly where do you think you need a gallon of salad dressing?….lol! But back to the cookes – once April arrives in Hotlanta, nothing chocolate can be packed in the car. I learned that lesson the hard way
I actually have some of the cinnamon sugar ones in my purse right now. I notice now they have popcorn, but it doesn’t say on the package if it is gluten-free, I need to follow-up on that.
