A new gluten-free loaf, Genius, has recently been launched in the United Kingdom. The bread is made by United Central Bakeries, which is part of the large Finsbury Food Group. It is a 400g unsliced loaf, of brown or white bread, with quite a long shelf life and it freezes well.
This gluten-free bread is totally different to all previous gluten free loaves. It isn’t cheap, selling for £2.49, but it feels like, looks like, and most important of all, it tastes like real bread! You would never know you were eating gluten-free bread.
Genius was developed by UCB in conjunction with Chef Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne and has just received the UK’s Innovative Award, from the Baking Industry Awards 2009, at the Park Lane Hilton Hotel in London.
The loaf is made from potato starch, plus corn flour and its gluten is replaced with egg proteins. When sliced the bread looks just like ordinary bread, it has air holes, doesn’t crumble or break up and when fresh it is a pleasure to eat. If you are looking for Genius bread, it is now on sale in Tesco’s, which is the UK’s largest supermarket and has branches throughout the UK.
Will it be coming to the United States? Who knows, but if you are ever in the UK, then look out for it. I’m confident that you will really enjoy it!

Isn’t Tesco opening a location in CA or somewhere in the U.S.? I know both them and Sainsbury have exceptional gluten-free products! I should have shipped home the shelf stable mini loaf cakes I found in London several years ago. They were incredible!
I will have to get my mother-in-law bring some over next time she visits…or send some!
I am looking for a kind soul in England willing to send me some Genius bread. I will pay all expenses including your time. Please get in touch if you are willing to help a desperate coeliac.
