Since going gluten free 5 years ago I have been a big fan of rice pasta. I found a brand that I love and have been with it ever since with no looking back. A few months ago I noticed a new product in our grocery store’s gluten-free aisle – organic corn pasta.
Prairie Harvest San Zenone is a 100% organic corn pasta that is gluten free and contains only 2 simple ingredients. A combination of certified organic corn flour and water this pasta is available in a variety of pasta shapes produced in a dedicated gluten-free facility.
Like I said, being brand loyal to my rice pasta I was sure that I was not going to like this corn pasta as much, but was willing to try. We eat a lot of rice in this house – with the pasta and as an actual side dish I was open to trying a new side – a new grain. My kids favorite pasta is fusilli – pairing with traditional spaghetti sauce I set out to make it for dinner and let the chips call where they may.
The directions are simple – boil water and cook for only 5-7 minutes which is much faster then the rice pasta I am used to. As a busy mom the quicker the meal is done, the better.
What was the verdict?:
I quickly fell in love with the organic corn pasta. It was quick to make, did not need to be rinsed and did not get gooey like some gluten free pasta’s can. The texture reminded me of traditional wheat pasta – not too soft and not too firm. There is no over-powering corn taste either which is something I was worried about. I have tried both the fusilli and spaghetti noodles and loved both of them equally. Another bonus to the corn pasta is it reheats well to eat leftovers the next day and also goes well as an element in a cold pasta.
My three children ate the pasta with no complaints and my gluten-able husband gave this pasta a two thumbs up. Overall the five of us now prefer this pasta to any other gluten free one we’ve tried.
