Product Review: Wild Alice Bars

There are many gluten-free bars on the market these days.  Some are fruit & nut-based, some are grain-based, some are protein-based and some are a combination.  One of the newer bars on the market today are Wild Alice Bars.  Wild Alice bars are gluten-free, vegan energy bars that are great for on-the-go snacks or to tide you over between meals.  There is nothing worse than being someplace where there is nothing safe and healthy to eat for those following the gluten-free diet.

Wild Alice Bars are baked in a dedicated, gluten-free kitchen in Portland, Oregon.  There are 2 varieties of bars – cranberry walnut and apricot cashew.  Wild Alice Bars can be eaten as is, crumbled & spread over yogurt or added to hot water to make a hot cereal.  More about Wild Alice Bars & the story of the wolf:

August of 2010 I visited Wolf Haven, a wolf sanctuary 90 miles north of Portland, Oregon, in the little town of Tenino, Washington. There I had the most wild experience I have ever experienced.

I took the 11:00 a.m. tour at Wolf Haven on a grey misty Saturday. Thankfully, rain does not bother wolves. My tour guide took us around to all the big enclosures in which each included two wolves, a male and a female, and she provided information and stories about the sanctuary and the wolves. We had just finished admiring the last two wolves, when one wolf from another enclosure began to howl. The guide said, “Wait. This will be quite a treat and doesn’t happen often during tours.”

One by one, all the wolves chimed in, creating a chorus of howling wolves. Imagine being surrounded by a dozen wolves of various types and colors with their mouths facing upwards, producing those magnificent sounds. The howling continued for at least three minutes. The wolves gradually decreased the length of their howls until there was only one wolf left making short stacatto “aroo’s”. Then it was quiet, and the wolves returned to whatever wolf activities they were doing before they joined the chorus.

How is it that I happened to be there at that moment to experience the call of the wild? Earlier in the year I had had a dream in which I was surrounded by wolves. I do not often take much notice of my dreams, but this one was so vivid and stayed in my consciousness. It was not a frightening dream. I was not being attacked. The wolves were just there. The next day, I went online to research dreaming of wolves. I came upon a site in which an article referenced the book, “Women Who Run With the Wolves” by Clarissa Pinkola Estés, PhD. What are the odds that Wild Alice should be introduced to this book which discusses women finding their wild side or true nature?

I think the wolf has always been there for me as my teacher, my protector, and my guide, leading me towards creating Wild Alice Bars and becoming Wild Alice. It is time to honor the wolf. Do something wild. Eat something wild.

How to tell if you need a Wild Alice Bar

Are you always on the go?
Are you sensitive to gluten?
Are you a vegetarian or a vegan?
Are you an athlete?
Do you like to eat yummy food?
Are you hungry?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, then you need a Wild Alice Bar!

I sampled both varieties of the Wild Alice Bars.  They both had a great flavor, but they were a little on the dry side.  I preferred them crumbled over Greek yogurt as to eaten whole.   I would love to try them crumbled & with hot water added to make a hot cereal, as suggested on the website.   I love the ingredient lists, as nothing scares me more than long lists of things that I can’t pronounce:

Cranberry Walnut – Ingredients: dried cranberries (dried cranberries, apple juice, sunflower oil), agave syrup*, quinoa flakes*, walnuts*, brown rice flour, Canola oil, apple juice concentrate, garbanzo bean flour, pea protein, dried apricots*, guar gum.

*Organic

Nutritional Stats: Calories – 237, 11g fat (Sat. fat 1g), 3g fiber, 4g protein.

Apricot Cashew – Ingredients: dried apricots*, agave syrup*, quinoa flakes*, cashews*, brown rice flour, Canola oil, apple juice concentrate, garbanzo bean flour, pea protein, guar gum.

*Organic

Nutritional Stats: Calories – 221, 9g fat (Sat. fat 1g), 2g fiber 5g protein.

The bars can be purchased on the Wild Alice website or in several stores in Oregon & Washington.  They are $16 for a box of 8 bars, plus $5.00 shipping & handling.  If you can’t decide which flavor to order, you can order a mixed box with 4 of each bar.
