Red Robin Continues to Offer Reliable Gluten-Free Options

While I have been dining at Red Robin gluten-free since 2006, it is not usually at the top of my list of choices.  After dining there again last night, I am wondering why not.  While the number of restaurants offering gluten-free menu choices has grown exponentially over the past few years, sometimes the reliability of those menus & options are inconsistent.

I can’t tell you how many times I have run out to try a new, gluten-free menu only to be disappointed that the establishment and their employees don’t seem to be very well versed in the specifics of the diet and potential dangers of cross contamination.  It gets frustrating and sometimes leads to bellies left empty, filled with bland options or upset due to accidental glutening.

When I think of Red Robin, I tend to think burgers & fries.  I forget that there are plenty of other options on the menu that can make a pretty healthy meal that is far from bland.

There are 4 dinner salads on the menu, 2 side salads and 4 dressing choices (modifications are noted on the allergen menu):

  • Apple Harvest Chicken Salad
  • Cobb Salad
  • Simply Grilled Chicken Salad
  • Mighty Ceasar Salad

Salads not your thing?  There are many burger and sandwich options that can be served “protein-style” or on a plate:

  • Natural Burger
  • Guacamole Burger
  • Royal Red Robin Burger
  • RR Gourmet Cheeseburger
  • RR Bacon Cheeseburger
  • California Chicken Sandwich
  • Brushcetta Chicken Sandwich
  • Chicken Caprese Sandwich
  • Simply Grilled Chicken Sandwich
  • Grilled Turkey Burger
  • Grilled Salmon Sandwich
  • Ensenada Chicken Platter

Sides are plentiful, too:

  • White Rice
  • Melon Wedges
  • Mandarin Oranges

  • Steak Fries (order without seasoning & verify they are fried in a dedicated fryer)

Last night instead of going with my traditional burger or turkey burger, I opted for the Chicken Caprese Sandwich, protein-style, a house salad & steamed broccoli.  Here is a description of the sandwich:

An Italian gourmet treasure. Tender grilled chicken breast topped with fresh Mozzarella cheese, balsamic marinated tomatoes and crisp romaine lettuce. Served on rustic ciabatta bread with pesto aioli. Delizioso.

Of course there was no ciabatta bread and I left off the aioli, though it is gluten-free.  The sandwich was phenomenal!  The mozzarella was tender & flavorful and the tomatoes were seasoned perfectly!

Red Robin has allergen menus for all of the major allergens.  When an order is placed the server puts an “allergy alert” on the order and then notes what the allergen is.  The kitchen staff has been well trained to prepare the food safely.  The allergen list is updated on a regular basis.

So while sometimes I think that choosing a “new” restaurant is a good idea, I was reminded last night that choosing a “tried & true” Red Robin not only proved to be a reliable option, but I discovered a new-to-me menu item that I can see going back for repeatedly.  Additionally, Red Robin has very reasonable prices and the kids love it!

    The Red Robin by us is awesome at addressing GF issues even at peak times! The managers will make sure to walk the order down the line to ensure there is not an issue with it and in the 1 1/2 yrs since I was diagnosed, I have yet to encounter a server who has not known what I was talking about when I said I was GF. I have only had a few issues with my orders but the managers were always right on it and would then comp the check! The chicken caprese done “protein style” has become one of my altime favorite treats! I just wish they would get a flourless chocolate cake :-)
