Restaurants near Gatwick Airport for Gluten-Free Food

How to get gluten-free food when you are actually in the Airport, this is a question we are often asked by visitors to the UK.  So what gluten free food is available  in Gatwick Airport?

At the Departure Lounge.   First you can purchase fresh fruit and eat the fruit with any packet of Walkers Crisps, (all Walker’s Crisps are  gluten free), but be careful if you cannot get Walkers, as many brands contain wheat flour, check the small print, sometimes extremely small!, but with the recently added UK and European Laws, on naming the contents, it should clearly state if it contains wheat flour or gluten, or in fact if it is Gluten-Free.

Then there is a large Marks & Spencers Store, you will see this store in nearly every town in the UK, it offers a number of salads, all of course being gluten free, avoid the dressings. M&S often have small gluten free cakes, but you will probably have to ask for them.

In Garfunkels you can get an omelet, with fries or salad. Just check how the fries are cooked, sometimes they mix them with items contaminated with flour, so be careful and ASK!.

That’s about all you will find to eat in the airport, but there is lots more gluten-free food outside.

If you have time, just a short distance North of the airport, is a huge Tesco Superstore, with a wide range of gluten-free products. South of Gatwick is Crawley Town, which has a dual carriageway road which goes around the town center, just off this road, you will find another large Tesco Superstore, a large Sainsbury Supermarket and in the Town Centre an Asda Supermarkets , they all have a gluten free areas called “Free From“, all these stores offer a wide range of gluten-free products, different types of bread, cakes, breakfast cereals, rolls, biscuits and lots more, but the GF food is not cheap, usually 3 times as much non-gluten free the same items, so if you have time, it will pay you to shop around

If you are staying in Crawley overnight, or going South to Brighton, or traveling into Central London, then you will find that many restaurants serve gluten free meals, ask to speak to the Manager or the Chef, they will be most willing to help you select items from their menus, which are gluten-free.

You will find a list of local gluten-free restaurants on the Crawley gluten-free support group.

Worked on computers for 35 years, then decided to quit the rat race so we all moved to Spain, to the Costa Del Sol for 20 years. Developed skin problems so returned to the UK in 2005, where my wife was diagnosed as suffering from the Celiac (UK Coeliac) disease. Found little local support, so created The Crawley Gluten Free Group, now with over 100 members and a free web site, now opened by 128 different countries.
