Review: Breakaway Bakery

The idea for Breakaway Bakery began seven years ago as a quest to find gluten-free baked goods that tasted good.  Janice Lavine and her daughter, Nava, experimented in the kitchen until they had success.  At the end of 2008, they took the plunge and opened Breakaway Bakery in LA.

I love the motto:

Breakaway from things that are bad for you.  Breakaway to a great taste adventure where the things you love to eat are also “honestly delicious and healthy.”

Breakaway Bakery makes a number of irresistible baked goods.  The products include:

  • Rolls and breads
  • Babkas and sticky buns
  • Cookies
  • Brownies and bars
  • Muffins, donuts and scones
  • Frozen batter and dough
  • Vegan options
  • Cupcakes and cakes

It is important to note that not all of the above produccts are available via delivery/online ordering.  All of the Breakaway Bakery products are:

  • Certified Organic
  • Certified Kosher
  • Certified Gluten Free
  • Made from only Organic Whole Grain Brown Rice — No Flour Blends
  • Made with 400% less starch than most GF Products
  • Organic Fruit-Infused
  • Free of all gums
  • Free of Preservatives & Trans fats

We received 10 different Breakaway Bakery items to sample.  The products were shipped to us in Ohio all the way from LA.  I was pleased to see that most of the bakery items remained in tact, though the lemon bar had crumbled just a bit.

  • Raspberry/cranberry crumble bar
  • Lemon bar
  • Plain roll
  • Cinnamon chocolate chip mandel bread
  • Vegan oatmeal cranberry chocolate chip cookie
  • Vegan cherry chocolate chip cookie
  • Chocolate chip cookie
  • Lil’ mint scoutie (their version of the Girl Scout Thin Mint)
  • Orange brownie dipper
  • Vegan mint or orange dipper

The shipment came with care instructions – what to do with the items immediately and then how to store them.  I chose to refrigerate all of the items since the weather has been excessively hot.  Jon loves lemon bars, so I knew he would be thrilled with the Breakaway Bakery version.  He loved it!  It had just the right amount of lemon and a wonderful texture.  I sampled the rest of the items and loved every single one of them!  The quality of the ingredients and bakery items is top notch!  My favorite products are the raspberry crumble bar and the vegan oatmeal cranberry chocolate chip cookie.

Breakaway Bakery may be located in LA, but they have delivery options for those wishing to order online.  There is a minimum $15.00 purchase and there are some shipping recommendations based on the distance you live from LA.
