Review: Eco-Planet Toaster Pastries

I have been hearing about the Eco-Planet Toaster Pastries (aka Pop-Tarts) for over a year now, but had yet to get my hands on a box of them until the other day.  The toaster pastries come in blueberry, strawberry & brown sugar cinnamon.  As much as the impulsive part of me wanted to buy all 3 varieties, I was able to stick with one box of the brown sugar cinnamon.  Since I now know where to find them, I can go back and get the others once we sample these.

The new toaster pastries are vegan, Kosher, made with 7 whole grains, certified by the GFCO and made with real fruit.  Each box contains 4 pastries and is priced at $4.99/box (what I paid at my local health food store, Raisin Rack).  Each pastry contains 200 calories, 7 grams of fat, 1 gram of fiber and 1 gram of protein.  Those stats are comparable to the original Pop-Tart.  More on the gluten-free certification and testing:

Eco-Heaven LLC produces a variety of products, including, Eco-Planet Gluten Free Hot Cereal.   Our #1 goal is to produce and market a safe gluten free cereal for consumers to enjoy.

Our cereal is a certified gluten free product, produced in a dedicated gluten free facility. The Gluten Free Certification Organization (GFCO), a non profit gluten free certifier, is our 3rd party certifier.  Under their supervision, we have always triple tested every batch of product using state of the art quantitative testing procedures approved by GFCO. This triple testing is above and beyond the requirements of GFCO, however, we feel it is a necessary to insure high quality gluten free products.

The triple testing is done as follows.  STEP 1 Based on a risk assessment, raw ingredients are pre-tested prior to entering our facility.  If they pass, then the shipment is sent by our suppliers.  STEP 2 Ingredients are quarantined in our facility until a second round of testing is completed.  If the ingredients pass the test, then they proceed on to blending.  STEP 3 Once the final product is blended and ready for packaging, it is tested a 3rd and final time.

All of our testing is done utilizing state of the art Neogen Veratox® Quantitative Gliadin R5 Antibody testing.

Eco-Planet has been producing our Hot Cereal since May of 2009 and has served several million servings without one single gluten related complaint.  During this time period GFCO has randomly tested our products and always found them to be in compliance with their strict gluten free guidelines.

Eco-Planet is passionate about producing truly gluten free products. We are working closely with the GFCO, Neogen and The  University of Nebraska (FARRP) to constantly review testing protocol.  Moreover, we are staying close to the advances in science as it relates to gluten free testing.  We will continue to implement the leading gluten free testing protocols as they are made available.

I was a little shocked when I opened the package, as the pastries appeared smaller than Pop-Tarts.  They also seemed very stiff/hard and there was no biting into the pastry until it was warmed, as I tried and was unsuccessful.

According to the box, the pastries can be warmed in the microwave on the high setting for 3 seconds (I am thinking that should have said 30 seconds) or in the toaster on the lightest setting.  We tried the toaster oven first.  The flavor of the toaster pastries is fantastic!  They certainly do remind me of the original Pop-Tarts.  The pastry is another story – it isn’t very tender, though it does have a good flavor, too.  Jon inhaled the pastry & asked about just eating them cold.  I encouraged him to eat them heated & the next one we tried, we used the microwave.  We had much better results with the microwave and finally found the perfect warming time of 45 seconds for 2 pastries.  Jon has finished the box already & asked for another, STAT!

Eco-Planet also makes hot cereal in addition to the toaster pastries.  Their products can be found in select stores across the US.  Have you tried the new Eco-Planet Toaster Pastries?  What did you think?

**The products reviewed in this blog post were purchased by me.

I’ve been waiting and waiting for these as well!! Was disappointed when I saw an awful review of them on Amazon, but I wonder if they didn’t play around with the heating instructions like you did? I, for one, can’t wait to try them. Did you find them online or in a store? I haven’t been able to find them anywhere!!

  2. Sara says:

Have you seen them in any other stores around Columbus?

    • Sara,

I have only seen them at Raisin Rack. I did check recently at Meijer in Westerville and while they carry the Eco-Planet hot cereal, they don’t carry these yet.

    Dear Kimberly,
Thanks for sharing that information. My son has celiac disease. I will definitely get some of those eco-planet toaster pastries. They will be great for snacks.
    Great article!

My husband has Celiac. He was so excited to try these. He said they aren’t very good yet ate the whole box. I guess they are better than no pop-tarts!
