Having celiac disease and having to eat gluten-free, makes it almost a quest to find the perfect safe versions of what we once used to enjoy. From bread, donuts, cookies, waffles and more. It is almost like as soon as we see something labeled gluten-free, it is a license to try it. As many of us with celiac know there are lots of hits and misses out there. Sometimes more misses than hits. But one company that has continued to put out consistently delicious gluten-free products is Udi’s, out of Denver, Colorado. I am more than ready to try anything new from them, and I have not yet been disappointed.
When I was given some samples to try of their new bagels, I jumped at the chance. I was given samples of their new whole grain and cinnamon raisin bagels. They are both gluten- and dairy-free. I already fell in love with their plain bagels, so I could not wait to get these toasted and served up with toppings.
I anxiously heated one of each of the bagels. I put cream cheese on the cinnamon raisin, and ate the whole grain bagel as a sandwich with a vegetarian Sunshine Burger and sharp cheddar cheese. My husband and daughter, who are not gluten-free, participated in the taste test.
Toasted, they had the texture of a “real” bagel…but these are real bagels, they are just made with a different combination of flours than one would find at a typical bagel shop. I think it would be seriously difficult to know the difference, the texture is amazingly comparable and toasts extremely well. The cinnamon raisin had a great flavor full of sweet, plump and juicy raisins. The whole grain had a hearty flavor and worked perfectly as a savory sandwich. I also had a wedge of a whole grain bagel with cream cheese and again, lovely.
They would both make a perfect breakfast, lunch or snack. The possibilities are endless….plain, butter, jam, as a burger bun, with cheddar and fresh salsa, or smoked salmon with cream cheese, capers and red onion. They are dangerously delicious at 280 calories per bagel, and not helping me on my quest to stay away from carbs.
Once again, Udi’s produces more winning products. These bagels are set to be released in January 2011, and are sure to be a regular favorite of mine.
In addition to these wonderful soon-to-be-released bagels, Udi’s serves up plain bagels, white sandwich and whole grain sliced bread, double chocolate muffins, blueberry muffins, lemon streusel muffins, cinnamon rolls, pizza crusts and granola. Udi’s can also be found at many grocery store chains, Whole Foods, Jason’s Deli and some college campuses around the country.

Greatly looking forward to this! Sad to see we have to wait until 2011 though….
I thought that too, but when you think about it, 2011 is only 3 months away…yikes!
So exciting! I am bummed that we have to wait as well!
I am not a patient person! LOL!
I LOVE these plain bagels! Just wish my local grocers would carry them. I have to drive 100 miles to the closest Whole Foods…
Cannot wait to try the new ones.
hi, i just tried the udi’s plain bagels with only butter and they were just sooooo plain (which obviously we are all used to). i think if i put some blueberry preserves or a bit of cheese on it next time, it will be a lot yummier… i can NOT wait to try the cinnamon raisin bagels!!! has anyone found some GOOD cinnamon buns?? udi’s makes one, but the frosting is NOT yummy =(.
I just tried the gluten free plain bagels and absolutely loved them. I didn’t realize they came in different flavors. I can’t wait to try them all. Thanks Udi’s for making gluten free living easier and delicious!
I love the Gluten free whole grain bread and the bagels are good too. I can’t wait to try the whole grain bagels! Thank you Udi’s but can you speed it up a bit??
Claudia – Both Everybody Eats and Heaven’s Mills make exceptional cinnamon buns and we usually have one of each in our freezer. For the plain Udi’s bagel, I sprinkle half of one (I can’t a whole one at once) with garlic power and onion powder. With some cream cheese spread, it reminds me a little of an everything type bagel. I’m looking forward to trying the new bagels from Udi’s as well
