I came across some bars I hadn’t seen before while surfing the internet a week or so ago. NuGo – nutrition to go – makes a wide variety of nutrition bars, many of which are gluten-free. They had sample packs available to order on their site, so I chose 3 gluten-free flavors & placed my order. The sample packs cost $5.00 and that includes shipping.

I ordered the NuGo Free bars in carrot cake, dark chocolate crunch & dark chocolate trail mix.
Carrot Cake:160 calories, 3g fat, 3g fiber, 9g protein. INGREDIENTS: RICE PROTEIN CRISP (RICE PROTEIN CONCENTRATE AND RICE FLOUR), CRISP RICE (RICE FLOUR), CRYSTALLINE FRUCTOSE, TAPIOCA SYRUP, WALNUTS, BROWN RICE SYRUP, ORGANIC AGAVE SYRUP, CHICORY ROOT FIBER, ICING (SUGAR, INVERT SUGAR, TAPIOCA SYRUP, WATER, FLAXSEED OIL, SALT, MICROCRYSTALLINE CELLULOSE), RAISINS, RICE PROTEIN, WATER, DRIED CARROTS, ORGANIC ACACIA GUM, CINNAMON, NATURAL FLAVORS, BAKING SODA, SALT, ALMONDS. This bar was pretty good. I could definitely taste the cinnamon & carrot. Healthier than carrot cake! There are other bars on the market that I like better, but this has decent protein for a gluten-free bar.
Dark Chocolate Crunch: 150 calories, 3g fat, 5g fiber, 9g protein. INGREDIENTS: RICE PROTEIN CRISP (RICE PROTEIN CONCENTRATE AND RICE FLOUR), CRISP RICE (RICE FLOUR), SEMI SWEET DARK CHOCOLATE (SUGAR UNSWEETENED CHOCOLATE, COCOA BUTTER), CRYSTALLINE FRUCTOSE, TAPIOCA SYRUP, BROWN RICE SYRUP, COCOA POWDER, ORGANIC AGAVE SYRUP, CHICORY ROOT FIBER, RICE PROTEIN, WATER, DATE PASTE, ORGANIC ACACIA GUM, NATURAL FLAVORS, BAKING SODA (SODIUM BICARBONATE), SALT. This bar was my favorite of the 3 that I tried. NuGo uses real dark chocolate, not hydrogenated oils or trains fats in their bars. Jon wasn’t crazy about this bar, he claimed he could taste the “fruit”, which is actually date paste.
Dark Chocolate Trail Mix: 160 calories, 5g fat, 4 grams fiber, 9 grams protein. INGREDIENTS: RICE PROTEIN CRISP (RICE PROTEIN CONCENTRATE AND RICE FLOUR), CRISP RICE (RICE FLOUR), SEMI SWEET DARK CHOCOLATE (SUGAR, UNSWEETENED CHOCOLATE, COCOA BUTTER), CRYSTALLINE FRUCTOSE, ALMONDS, TAPIOCA SYRUP, BROWN RICE SYRUP, ORGANIC AGAVE SYRUP, CHICORY ROOT FIBER, CRANBERRIES (SUGAR), RICE PROTEIN, PUMPKIN SEEDS, FLAXSEED, WATER, ORGANIC ACACIA GUM, FLAXSEED OIL, NATURAL FLAVORS, BAKING SODA (SODIUM BICARBONATE), SALT, WALNUTS. The trail mix really makes this bar stand out. I love dried fruit & chocolate, so this was right up my alley with the cranberries in the bar.
NuGo bars are a nice option to have available for active people. Keep them in your purse or backpack for emergencies or snacks to hold you over until your next meal. NuGo Free bars are certified gluten-free, which is really important, especially in light of some gluten-free grains testing positive for gluten. You can read more about that in Tiffany’s article.
