Recently, the Cedarlane Three Layer Enchilada Pie started sporting the gluten-free label. It’s a frozen meal, which in the past contained gluten. One day I noticed the change, when picking up the Five Layer Mexican Dip by Cedarlane. The Enchilada Pie had always been made with corn tortillas but as it also contained soy sauce. The item is made with wheat free tamari sauce now and that seems to be the only change, besides the gluten-free stamp on the box.
This particular product is made with organic ingredients including corn tortillas, beans and tomatoes. The “Certified Organic by Quality Assurance International” seal is on the package. According to the nutritional panel, there are two servings in the 5.5 oz. package, but most people would consider the meal to contain only one serving. There are only 215 calories per serving but if one eats the whole thing they will consume 430 calories, which is still a decent number for a meal. However, the fat and sodium numbers per serving are fairly steep – 11% and 25% respectively. The fiber content is also high at 11% per serving.
Our favorite product from this line, the Five Layer Mexican Dip actually indicates that there are 10 servings in a box. No one would dream of serving that tiny container to even four people so how the company came up with the number ten is a mystery. Someone who works in a tiny health food store here said she considers it only one serving and at our house it serves two. Due to the high fat and calorie count, we don’t have it very often. If you haven’t tried it yet, be warned that it’s somewhat addictive!
The Enchilada Pie took just over 6 minutes to cook in the microwave. The overall taste was fairly good but the sauce was just slightly runny. It was still full of nice flavors with the onion, green chilis and cilantro in the dish working well together. The corn tortillas are quite good and as the product name implies, there are three of them. Between each layer is the filling which also contains black olives, tomatoes, cheese and black beans. I added a dollup of sour cream as I often do with such dishes. On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d rate the Enchilada Pie a 7 but I’d rate the Mexican Dip from Cedarlane a 12.
It’s very nice to see more companies investigating whether or not they make any gluten-free products and wonderful to find out that they have reformulated something to be gluten-free. Cedarlane also recently introduced a line of gluten-free egg-white omelets. Kudos to Cedarlane for making at least a few gluten-free meals for us to enjoy!
