Review: Toosie’s Gluten-Free Blueberry Muffins

I love blueberry muffins.  If I can’t catch them right out of the oven while they are warm, I will toast them lightly in the toaster oven so that the butter I spread over them can melt & soak into all of the crevices .  There is just something about blueberry muffins that comforts me; like a pair of arms wrapping around me telling me that it is all going to be okay.

Toosie’s Gluten-Free is a brand that I just learned of recently.  Toosie’s is named after the founder’s mother – a nickname that is an Italian word for “mistake”.  More about how Toosie’s Gluten-Free came about:

Growing up in an Italian family our world revolved around food.  I was always surrounded by women and men who cooked.  The entire family contributed to the meals and my godmother, Aunt Nancy was the baker of the family.  I was the one who loved to cook and stood by my mother’s side learning all of our family recipes. Soon I was tossing Toosie’s notes and coming up with my own creations!

My Dad was no slouch in the kitchen either.  He was in charge of soups and chilis on those cold winter nights.  Dad’s Great Aunt Mary Rowe lived on a Bean Plantation in Knoxville, Tennessee and taught the local cooking classes.  So we have had cooking genes on both sides of the family!

This love of food led me to my career as a chef and opening up two successful restaurants with my husband Jim.

At the age of 30 I developed multiple food allergies and intolerances.  Determined not to be just satisfied with what I could eat or create I set out to develop Gluten Free foods and catered to my “allergic” clientele at the restaurants.

After much prompting from my loyal customers to makes Toosie’s available on a larger scale we sold our restaurant to concentrate on makings Toosie’s available to everyone.

Here at Toosie’s we have just started to bring to your home the gourmet, delicious, chef created products!  We will always strive to bring you the best versions of our family recipes and give you endless ideas on how to create your Gluten Free environment without the sacrifice for wonderful and delicious tasting foods.

The muffins were very easy to make and I don’t know that I have ever seen fluffier muffins!  I used frozen blueberries for this recipe, but fresh would work just as well.  Don’t like blueberries?  Add your fruit or mix-in of choice.  Ingredients:  Whole grain brown rice flour, pure cane sugar, potato starch, tapioca starch, baking powder (sodium pyrophospate, bicarbonate soda, cornstarch, monocalcium phosphate), xanthan gum, salt, cinnamon, natural vanilla powder (natural flavor, sugar, cornstarch).

Look at how these muffins just grew right out of the pan!

The texture was that of a non-gluten-free muffin and the flavor was out of this world!  Honestly these didn’t even need butter, but old habits die hard, right? Jon was also a huge fan of these muffins, eating them right as they came out of the oven!

Toosie’s has several other gluten-free mixes in addition to the muffin mix.  All of the mixes are tested to ensure that they are gluten-free.  Additionally, Toosie’s will be going through the process to get their products certified gluten-free.  The mixes can be purchased right on Toosie’s website, which also has a recipe page should you need inspiration with any of their products.  Make sure to check back for reviews of some of Toosie’s other products.
