Review: Trader Joe’s Mango Ginger Chutney

Ever since my first experience with a real mango last month, I have had a small obsession with it.  I have now been finding mango everything – salsa, sorbet and now this Mango Ginger Chutney from Trader Joe’s:

I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with the chutney, but I knew that I would find a good use for it.  I opened the bottle as soon as I got home to take a taste.  I loved the aroma coming out of the jar – I couldn’t seem to locate a spoon fast enough!  The taste was sweet & spicy with a nice ginger flavor throughout.  While this isn’t one of the products that Trader Joe’s labels “free from gluten”, there are no gluten-containing ingredients listed on the label.  The ingredients are:

Mango, sugar, red bell pepper, water, red wine vinegar, raisins, ginger, tapioca starch, spice, locust bean gum, xanthan gum and sea salt.

I further read the label to see what the suggestions for use were:

Made with classic mango ginger and aromatic spices, our chutney goes well on just about any cold or hot meats.   Use it as a spread on sandwiches, or as an accompaniment to Indian dishes.

I have now used this on chicken and salmon, as a spread on an Udi’s gluten-free bagel and on my baked potato.  I just now thought about using it as a topping for vanilla ice cream!  I know that sounds odd, but one of my favorite ice cream places, Jeni’s, combines unique ingredients to make some of the best ice cream I have ever tasted.  I think this would also be good with a bowl of quinoa topped with black beans, real mango and roasted veggies.  Oh, and on on pork – either chops or ribs.  See, the ideas just keep coming!

Part of the fun of trying new foods is experimenting with the ingredients.  Sure, there are the intended uses or suggestions, but I like to go “off the map”.  I remember creating weird dishes growing up – mixing chili with mashed potatoes & topping with cheese; mixing up my meat loaf, gravy peas & mashed potatoes, etc.  Trader Joe’s is one of my favorite stores for this exact reason.

Psst…..Trader Joe’s also has organic quinoa for cheaper than I have found anywhere else – a 1 lb. box was under $5.00.

The quinoa does have the “no gluten ingredients” symbol in the bottom left corner on the front.

    As I love to create jewelry; I also love to play with my food. I created a mango ginger dressing for a tossed salad using this product. Trader Joe’s can’t keep it on the shelf long enough! 🙂
