Review: Van’s Whole Grain Crackers

The quest for the perfect gluten-free cracker.  Does that cracker exist?  I didn’t think it was possible when I began the gluten-free diet in January 2006, but with the recent explosion of gluten-free goods on the market, I believe that we may be getting close.  Van’s Natural Foods started their gluten-free product line making waffles, in fact they were one of the foods I heavily depended on in those first few months.  They have recently expanded their line of gluten-free waffles and pancakes to include Whole Grain Snack Bars, Whole Grain Cereals and Whole Grain Crackers.

I was excited when these arrived on my doorstep!  There are three enticing varieties of Whole Grain Crackers.

Say Cheese!: Ingredients: (that we are proud of!) Van’s Gluten Free Whole Grain Blend (Oats, Brown Rice Flour, Millet, Quinoa and Amaranth), Non-GMO Expeller Pressed Canola and/or Sunflower Oil, Potato Starch, Rice Flour, Cheddar Cheese (Cultured Milk, Salt, Enzymes), Whey, Brown Sugar, Salt, Buttermilk, Yeast Extract, Sesame Seeds, Sunflower Lecithin, Spices, Beta Carotene and Annatto Extract (for color), Natural Flavors, Citric Acid. Contains: Milk.

Lots of Everything!: Ingredients: (that we are proud of!) Van’s Gluten Free Whole Grain Blend (Oats, Brown Rice Flour, Millet, Quinoa and Amaranth), Non-GMO Expeller Pressed Canola and/or Sunflower Oil, Potato Starch, Brown Sugar, Rice Flour, Sesame Seeds, Salt, Yeast Extract, Poppy Seeds, Dried Onion, Dried Garlic, Sunflower Lecithin, Caraway Seeds

Multigrain: Ingredients: (that we are proud of!) Van’s Gluten Free Whole Grain Blend (Oats, Brown Rice Flour, Millet, Quinoa and Amaranth), Non-GMO Expeller Pressed Canola and/or Sunflower Oil, Potato Starch, Brown Sugar, Rice Flour, Sesame Seeds, Salt, Yeast Extract, Sunflower Lecithin.

The crackers were a little smaller than I had pictured them being, but that didn’t stop me from diving right in.  I opened the Say Cheese! box first and think I found a close relative to the gluten-filled cheese cracker that I miss so much!  The Van’s Say Cheese! cracker is thinner than my old favorite, but still packs a crisp, cheesy punch.  The Multigrain variety is equally as tasty and crispy and works well along side a piping hot bowl of soup or crisp, cool salad.

The crackers retail for $2.99/box are baked with nutrient-rich whole grains including gluten-free oats, brown rice, millet, quinoa and amaranth.  All products are certified gluten-free by the GFCO and can be found in Wal-Mart, Safeway and Sprouts stores nationwide.

Have you tried Van’s Whole Grain Crackers yet?  Which variety do you most want to try?

These Van’s Lot’s of Everything crackers are absolutely the best crackers I’ve ever had… not like the typical gluten free crackers.
