Review: Wholesome Chow Chocolate Cake Mix

Wholesome Chow.  Awesome name, right?  Cakes & pancakes, that is what they make.  Not only are their mixes gluten-free, but vegan, too!

I was offered samples of the chocolate cake & all purpose baking & pancake mix.  I plan on making pancakes later this week, but wanted to share the chocolate cake mix review now because it was that good!

In addition to the chocolate cake & pancake mix, they also make a yellow cake and a lavender chocolate cake.

Wholesome Chow is a great name for these mixes because they contain no refined sugar, use organic, fair trade ingredients & compostable packaging and are allergy friendly.  All gluten-free, vegan mixes are free of:

  • dairy/casein
  • eggs
  • nuts & peanuts
  • gluten

I  needed a good reason to celebrate the last day before school started, so why not celebrate with chocolate cake, right?   The cake was super easy to prepare, only requiring almond (or other non-dairy milk) and oil.  I opted to make cupcakes so the leftovers would be easy to transport to school (or in my purse).  I ‘greased’ the cupcake pan with Pam and quickly mixed up the batter.  I had already preheated the oven to 350 and placed the cupcake pan on the middle rack to bake.  *Side note, if you don’t have an oven thermometer to monitor the inside temperature of your oven, consider investing in one.  They are generally under $10 and worth their weight in gold.  I had a brand new oven that was off 25+ degrees and had to calibrate it.  These cupcakes took just 18 minutes to bake.

They look great, right?  These are actually Jon’s – I snagged a quick picture before he dove in.  The cakes were moist & full of chocolate flavor.   Jon chose to frost his with a pre-made frosting; I opted for Trader Joe’s almond butter on mine.  Jon and I both agreed that these were excellent and we have been fighting over the remaining cupcakes.

Next up, pancakes!  Perhaps breakfast for dinner! Have you tried any of the Wholesome Chow gluten-free products?
