Review: ZonePerfect Perfectly Simple Bars

Earlier this month I discovered that ZonePerfect was making gluten-free protein bars.  In expert gluten-free shopping fashion, I flipped over the box, saw “oats” and put it back on the shelf only to then notice “gluten-free” was right on the front of the box!  After further investigation, I found that the oats are gluten-free and testing is done on the bars to ensure they meet the guidelines of less than 20ppm set in place by the GFCO.

I was thrilled to receive samples of all three varieties of these bars!  I love being able to get a quick dose of protein after a workout.  These bars are simple to eat on the way home from the gym or before I hop into the shower to get ready for my day and can sit down to have breakfast.

All three bars contain minimal ingredients, always a plus in my book!  Each bar contains 10 grams of protein and varies in calories from 170 to 210.

The first bar that I tried was the Cranberry Almond.  It had a nice flavor and texture, similar to a Lara Bar, but with a little more substance.  Next on my list was the Toasted Coconut bar.  There aren’t many things that I don’t like that have coconut in them – this bar was no exception!  I loved it!  Last up was the Peanut Crunch, which I had heard from a gluten-free friend was awesome.  She didn’t lie!  This bar was my favorite of all three of the bars.  I can definitely see keeping these bars on hand to refuel after my long runs or strength training sessions.  Best thing about these bars is there was no stomach upset at all.  Yes, they are gluten-free, but sometimes protein bars don’t agree with my stomach.  I have to believe that the simple ingredients in the bars have something to do with this.

While browsing the FAQ section of the ZonePerfect websites I found this information about their products:

Q: Are there any ZonePerfect Nutrition Bars that are gluten-free?

Yes, our Perfectly Simple Nutrition Bars are gluten-free.
Several other bars do not have gluten containing ingredients (wheat, rye, barley, malt) but they are not tested and certified gluten free.
Chocolate Almond Raisin
Chocolate Caramel Cluster
Chocolate Coconut Crunch
Chocolate Peanut Butter
Fudge Graham
Double Dark Chocolate
Dark Chocolate Caramel Pecan
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

I have heard of others eating certain ZonePerfect bars because they don’t contain any gluten ingredients.  I don’t eat them because I am extremely sensitive and would rather not take my chances.  I’ll stick with the Perfectly Simple bars that are tested and certified.  ZonePerfect Perfectly Simple bars can be found in stores across the country.

Have you tried the new Perfectly Simple bars?  What did you think?

I discovered them about a month ago too & have tried the toasted coconut & cranberry almond. I like them better than Lara bars but not as much as Kind bars. I seldom have a regular lunch & usually just have a bar to hold me over so I have tried my share of bars!

The regular Zone Perfect bars have been a staple of my gluten-free diet for years. While the Perfectly Simple bars are good they don’t live up to the Zone Perfect Fudge Graham bars or the Chocolate Peanut Butter bars, both which don’t contain any gluten ingredients. I have been eating them for breakfast for years!

    • Christine,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I am glad you shared that you have been eating the other bars that don’t contain gluten as well. Can I ask if you have Celiac Disease? Do you usually show a reaction if you accidentally consume gluten?
