Rosemary Chowder Warms the Soul

When I picked up the new condensed soups from Pacific Natural Foods recently, I picked up another soup I’d not seen before called Rosemary Potato Chowder. The fact that the soup had milk in it was all I needed to know to throw it in my cart.

There are two servings in the small boxes of Pacific Foods soups and the price was over $2. At first, I thought the price was a bit high, but I just stocked up on Progresso soups for half price. The regular price for Progresso soups is just a bit less than Pacific Foods soups and the latter brand is definitely more of a gourmet foodie’s cup of soup – so to speak – than anything from Progresso.

The Pacific Natural Foods soup cartons are a bit tricky to open, but none of the soup is wasted once you get it open. You can even use a small spatula to get every last drop out. Immediately, I noticed that the soup was fairly thick and it hadn’t even been heated up yet. As I slowly heated the great smelling soup – or rather chowder – it began to thicken almost instantly. The longer you simmer it, the thicker it gets and I let mine get really thick just as chowder should be.

The Rosemary Potato Chowder was creamy and incredibly delicious!. In my opinion, it could use just a touch more rosemary, but I can’t get enough of that particular herb. Pacific Natural Foods has gluten-free products in several categories including :

(Excerpt from Pacific Natural Foods website)

All Soy Beverages

All Creamy Soups
All Broths
All Iced Teas
All Condensed Soups

Nut & Grain Beverages

Hearty Artisan Soups

Hearty Carton Soups

Adding some cooked chicken to the Rosemary Potato Chowder makes it a truly hearty dish. Pairing it with a nice green salad and a dinner roll from Katz Gluten Free, makes for a perfect cold weather dinner.

Pacific Natural Foods soups can be purchased at Whole Foods, some mainstream grocery stores, many health food stores and online.

So, are you saying that Progresso Soups are gluten free? I just automatically presumed that all canned soups were off limits. This would be wonderful to find that something I don’t have to make myself could be used!

  2. Hi Toni – Yes, some Progresso soups are gluten-free. They were introduced quite a while back and the options are listed on http://www.liveglutenfreely.com. Just click on Progresso on the home page and the list of gf labeled soups will pop up. For frozen gf soups, Kettle Cuisine soups are excellent and 4 of them are also dairy free. Additionally, Imagine soups probably has the most extensive line of gf soup options, including ready-made turkey and beef gravy.

  3. Tiffany,

This soup sounds so good! I haven’t seen it before. I just tried the Kettle Cuisine Chili for the first time this past weekend while at the local Celiac Conference and was very impressed!

  4. Oh yes, this soup is fabulous! They don’t have it at our Whole Foods yet, but I’m sure they’ll add it soon. Kettle Cuisine soups are always in the freezer….my fave is the chicken chili with the Angus steak chili after that ;) The people that run that company are awesome people for sure!

Oohh….sounds delicious! I was actually about to run to Whole Foods so I will have a look, and I just happen to have some Katz dinner rolls in the freezer, thanks for the pairing suggestion!
