According to a recent article in the New York Times, it looks like Quest Diagnostics, Inc. (a major labratory services company in the United States) has possibly provided false test results over the past two years.
Unfortunately, these false test results can cause two major problems:
- Test Results Were To High (Most Cases) – People who needed vitamin D supplements would not have realized it and in turn not taking the supplements they need.
- Test Results Were To Low (Few Unique Cases) – Doctors would prescribe doses that were too high.
For people with Celiac Disease, it is common that they have a low Vitamin D count due to mal-absorption of nutrients.
The good news is that Quest Diagnostics, Inc. has notified the doctors affected by this problem and hopefully in most (if not all) cases a new test will be conducted. If you’ve had a Vitamin D blood test in the past 2-3 years, you’ll want to contact your doctor just to be safe.

This is bad news that they got it wrong but at least they’re correcting their mistake by contacting the doctors. Hope it reaches the patients as it should.
Tks and rgds,
Helen
