Gluten-Free Restaurant Menu

Gluten-Free on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Last Updated on March 5, 2023 by the Celiac-Disease.com Staff Leave a Comment

Hilton Head Island, SC has been a favorite of mine since I was little, and now we go as a family at least once a year. It is a nice, easy getaway from Atlanta. Typically we cook our meals at the house, in addition to keeping costs down, I don’t have to worry or stress about cross-contamination at restaurants.

But on this recent visit, we decided to explore a little bit, and since going gluten-free this was my first time actually eating out there.  I tried to do some research before our holiday and ask for suggestions, but the only responses I received were for chain restaurants.  And while I appreciate that chain restaurants are expanding their gluten-free offerings, those are restaurants I can go to anywhere, whether I am in Hilton Head or on the west coast.  I really wanted to find something unique and local.

We happened to have some friends staying on Hilton Head at the same time and they suggested meeting at The Sea Shack for dinner. One look at the website and it looked like a gluten haven, but after calling and being reassured I could order fish grilled, I felt a little better.  When we arrived, it really did look like a shack in a very-unlikely area.  Nothing fancy, yet  had a line out the door at 7pm.  Seeing all the fried items, I was a little apprehensive…ok, a lot apprehensive.  It is the type of place you go to the counter and order, so I asked several questions, while holding up the line and placed my order.  I ordered plain, grilled salmon, with grits and cucumber salad.  I also asked them if they could grill my fish on a clean surface and not to add any seasoning. They seemed pretty knowledgeable and  pretty sure their seasonings were safe, but I didn’t want to risk it, especially on vacation.  This reminded me why going to a restaurant for the first time when it is packed is not the best idea.

Thankfully, the dinner was delicious.  I looked longingly at my daughter’s hushpuppies, but I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and left there feeling great.  I will definitely be back on our next visit.

Another night during our visit, I really wanted to take a break from cooking and do something easy. This time I went against my philosophy of “no chains” and decided to order out from Mellow Mushroom, which I have yet to try since going gluten-free.  I miss the days when I could eat the gluten-filled Mellow Mushroom crust and it smells so good, but I was happy I could still go there and order a pizza.  The gluten-free crust only came in a 12″, so I ordered a Mega Veggie on gluten-free crust, and a Greek salad (the dressing is gluten-free).  My husband and I were very pleased with the pizza, and sharing that and a salad was more than enough.  We even had enough salad for lunch the next day.

On our last night, we decided to go out one more time, and this time we tried Land’s End Tavern at South Beach Marina in Sea Pines. We choose this place based on the pirate theme…there was no planning or calling ahead for this one.  I figured I could order grilled fish if nothing else.

Luckily, before being seated, I asked the hostess about gluten-free options and she told me she also had celiac and went through the menu and marked everything that was safe.  And let me know anytime a dish has fried fish, it could also be done grilled.  She also told me they had a separate fryer just for fries, so I was exited about this.  But, then she went on to say how while she has celiac, she will sometimes cheat – my confidence just dropped.  When we sat down I asked the server to confirm about the fryer and he said no, they are all fried in the same oil. That nixed my chances for tasting my daughter’s fries.  I ended up ordering grilled fish (swordfish) tacos with crispy corn tortillas with mashed potatoes and steamed veggies.  The fish tacos were very tasty and I felt great after the meal.  My husband ordered the same as me, but fried, and after tasting mine, he said he preferred mine.  Plus, the grilled is much healthier.

All in all, my three experiences eating out while we were in Hilton Head were a success, and I would be happy to revisit all three of these places. My conclusion when visiting a beach side restaurant, stick with simple…grilled fish, grilled or steamed veggies and potatoes.  But always ask questions about exact ingredients and preparations.

Gluten-Free Quick Service Dining at Disney World

Last Updated on March 12, 2023 by the Celiac-Disease.com Staff Leave a Comment

During our recent trip to Walt Disney World, I planned many of our meals in advance by making dining reservations and noting my gluten-free requirements so I could be sure that one, we were able to get a table; and two, that they were prepared for me.

So tackling the quick service environment felt a little bit more unpredictable since there were no reservations made, and they are pretty packed with people wanting their food fast.  Not the environment you think of as being able to serve you safely and cross-contamination friendly.

Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe

For our first lunch, I was prepared with a list that Disney provided me ahead of time, of certain items that would be safe around the park from snack cart items to sit-down restaurants.  We decided to eat at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe in Tomorrowland.  I went to the counter and told them I needed to eat gluten-free and they told me a manager would be right out to speak with me.  Even though it was during a busy lunchtime, the manager was out within minutes.  He explained most of the sandwiches would be safe with a gluten-free bun, and that the fries were not safe as they are fried with gluten-containing products and they have gluten-free brownies.  I decided to get a veggie wrap, but on a gluten-free bun, rather than in a flour wrap, the Greek salad, and a gluten-free brownie.  The manager placed my order personally and made the kitchen aware that it was a gluten-free order. They all seemed to take it very seriously.

My husband ordered a regular veggie wrap, which was huge and looked pretty tasty.  However, in comparison, my version was much smaller, and my gluten-free bun – once again by Ener-G, was cold, sticky, and fell apart.  I can say that out of all the food I had at Disney, this was the most disappointing.  The veggie wrap was full of hummus and veggies, but with a cold bun falling apart, it just became a mess.  My husband really enjoyed his gluten-filled version.  The salad was much more enjoyable.  I ended the meal with the gluten-free brownie, which was made by French Meadow Bakery, and delicious! I did find though that nowhere in the restaurant was it noted they had gluten-free items or substitutes, you had to ask for them specifically, but thankfully, I was not charged an additional fee for the disappointing cold bun.

I think that by now, being on my third meal of having an Ener-G bun, I went from ecstatic to a bit bored with it, but all in all, I was thrilled it was an option. I also came to the conclusion that it is only enjoyable when warmed.

Sunshine Seasons Food Fair

We were in Epcot on our second day and decided to have lunch at the Sunshine Seasons Food Fair, the food seemed a lot more interesting than the quick service the day before, and I definitely wanted to order something that didn’t come with an Ener-G roll this time. We happened to get there right at the height of lunchtime, so that made me a bit weary, and there was so much available and it all looked really good, it was difficult to know where to start.  I asked someone at the counter to point me in the right direction and luckily it happened to be the chef, so she stepped aside and walked me through the areas and told me what was safe, and was extremely patient with me and all of my questions. I even went back to her at one point to ask her some more questions and she made sure I felt comfortable with her answers. There is a grilled foods section and I was surprised that she said it was all safe, even the gravy for the mashed potatoes, for which they use corn starch.  I decided on a roasted beet salad with goat cheese and candied pecans, and the Nicoise sustainable fish (again Mahi Mahi) served with an olive dressing on top of green beans and diced potatoes topped with pine nuts. And of course a gluten-free brownie, by French Meadow Bakery, for dessert.  The chef put it together personally, right in front of me.  The salad normally comes with flatbread, but she was careful to use clean gloves and to leave the bread away from my plate.    This time the brownies were on display, and I didn’t need to ask for them.

I was extremely impressed by this experience and the food.  My husband and I shared the two dishes and both were fresh, creative, and tasty and not what I would have expected from a quick-service restaurant at a theme park.  I would definitely have this meal again.

Is Sushi Gluten-Free?

Last Updated on March 5, 2023 by the Celiac-Disease.com Staff Leave a Comment

I realized this is a tougher question than I thought, two days ago.  The immediate response may be, sure it is, because it is mainly rice and raw fish…seems pretty safe, right?  Wrong.

Sushi seems like is should be pretty straight-forward and in some cases it can be, but in others hidden gluten can innocently be missed. The other night we went out for sushi for the first time in a while.  I am usually so up on my game when checking out if a restaurant is safe by calling ahead of time, looking up reviews, but this caught me totally by surprise.  I knew to stay away from the imitation crab, which contains gluten, and regular soy sauce, as well as some wasabi (which can sometimes contain wheat), but this was a new one to me.

I was totally looking forward to having sushi, so we get to a nice sushi restaurant that I have wanted to try for years, and as soon as we sit down, I ask if they happen to have gluten-free soy sauce.  They do – bonus, because I forgot mine. I ask if this fish has been marinated in anything, they tell me that no, it is plain fish unless we order a roll with sauce.  Great.  Next I ask about some non-sushi dishes to order as a side and ask if those sauces would be free of gluten and safe and they tell me no, everything has soy sauce.  Fair enough.  We order drinks, order our sushi, and my mouth is watering in anticipation of this meal.  Next, the server comes to our table and tells me that the sushi rice has a sauce with vinegar and wheat in it.  What???  With this new piece of information, we decided to leave, because now, I couldn’t even eat sushi, so really there was nothing to eat except maybe steamed edamame.

We decided to try another sushi place, Ru San’s, which is a local Atlanta chain of reasonably priced and unique sushi combinations.  Plus, I had remembered that I read a review on Yelp, of someone saying they were gluten-free and ate there regularly.  I decided to play it safe anyway, and called them on the ride over to confirm their rice was safe.  I would never even of thought that sushi was rice was something I needed to question, but now I know.  Ru San’s confirmed their rice was safe, so I picked up a bottle of gluten-free tamari and we were on our way.

Not only was their sushi safe (as long as you stay away from the imitation crab, tempura and any rolls that come with sauces, such as spicy tuna), they made us fried rice using our gluten-free soy sauce.  They also told me that they usually do have gluten-free soy sauce on hand, but didn’t that night.  I am glad I came prepared.

I have also heard that some places will put sesame seed mixtures on the outside of the rolls, and some of these mixtures contain wheat.  Ru San’s used plain sesame seeds, but when I looked at a bottle of sesame seed seasoning mix on the table, I saw that it contained sesame seeds, seaweed and wheat, so be sure to ask that they are not using that on your rolls.

In my pre-celiac days, I liked to start a sushi meal with miso soup and salad with ginger dressing, but now it is important to ask what ingredients go into the soup and salad dressing before ordering.

Sushi can be an easy meal to enjoy gluten-free if you know what questions to ask and where to know where there might be hidden gluten.  Be sure to ask about any seasoning in the sushi rice; any kind of seasoning on the fish; and the sauces used in some sushi rolls. And always remember to bring your own soy sauce and stay away from the imitation crab.

As always, when dining out gluten-free, do your due diligence and make sure the staff understands your needs. There are very few restaurants that are 100% gluten-free, so cross-contamination is always a risk. If you don’t feel comfortable with what you are hearing from the staff, perhaps it is best to dine elsewhere.

Qdoba’s Gluten-Free Menu

Last Updated on February 7, 2024 by the Celiac-Disease.com Staff 4 Comments

When you have celiac disease you really learn to appreciate the times you can easily eat at restaurants with your gluten-able friends. To be able to walk into a restaurant and order and know you can eat something is such a great feeling to someone who is restricted in what they can eat. It is an even better thing when restaurants clearly list allergens on their websites and what foods are safe to eat. Qdoba is one of those places. I am not much of a fast food fan, but burrito places are my indulgence, and I have always loved the roasted vegetables at Qdoba. It is nice to be able to get fast food that feels healthy and fresh compared to many of the alternatives. Earlier this year I wrote an article about the gluten-free options at Chipotle, which is another favorite of mine and I am equally happy to go to either.

Official Website Menu Information: Qdoba Gluten-Free Menu
Location Finder: Find a Qdoba Location Near You

Most of their items are naturally gluten-free, and their allergen page lists exactly what has wheat and what could possibly be cross-contaminated with wheat. Unfortunately, their chips are out, as they are fried with flour tortillas, but they do offer soft white corn tortillas that are listed as safe. According to their allergen list everything is wheat-free except for the tortilla chips, strips, taco shells, flour tortillas, brownies, ancho chile BBQ, fat-free ranch dressing, and the fat-free picante ranch dressing.

I have always enjoyed the flavor of their grilled vegetables which are not offered at Chipotle, so today I ordered a naked burrito (with no tortilla, served in a bowl) with the grilled vegetables (zucchini, yellow squash, and red pepper) and fajita vegetables (bell peppers and onions) and a side of their spicy queso dip. Today, I took my order to go and enjoyed the cheese dip at home with my own chips, but on other occasions, I would bring my own chips. The location I went to today seemed very knowledgeable about how to handle food allergies.

As always, you need to be aware of the risk of cross-contamination whenever eating somewhere where gluten foods are prepared. My usual practice when going somewhere where I watch them put together my food is to let them know I am gluten-free, or sometimes I will just say I have a wheat allergy because not everyone is aware of what gluten is. I then ask if they can replace their gloves and about 95% of them are already happily starting to do this before I finish my sentence. Since it seems people tend to grab the cheese with their hands, I will sometimes ask if they can grab cheese out of a new container.  Qdoba and Chipotle keep new cheese containers right under the work area, so they can easily grab some for you and not hold up the line.

Qdoba and Chipotle are both my top places to go for a quick meal. I am pretty sensitive and have always had a positive experience at both of these places. At Chipotle it is nice to be able to have the chips to add some crunch to my burrito bowl, but Qdoba has grilled vegetables that I love, and for a non-meat eater that is a great thing.
