Kroger’s Private Label Gluten-Free List

Last Updated on December 31, 2023 by the Celiac-Disease.com Staff 31 Comments

When traveling, I often depend on Kroger for gluten-free food when I get to my destination. Not only do they carry Udi’s at all of their stores, but they have a nice selection of other gluten-free brands. I don’t think that there has been a time I can remember while traveling that I have felt like I couldn’t find what I needed at a Kroger store.

The list below is a list that can be viewed on Kroger’s website and is updated periodically. Always refer to the product’s ingredient list for the most up-to-date information. Questions should be directed to Kroger at 1-800-KROGERS  (1-800-576-4377).

The best part about having lists like this is being able to use some of these store brand name products in place of national brand name products.  Not only does that help save money, but I can think of at least one instance where the Kroger Brand product is gluten-free, but the national brand product is not – case-in-point – Nestle Butterscotch Chips contain barley malt, but the Kroger Private Label brand does not.  The Kroger Private Label also includes the following brands:   Kroger, Private Label, Naturally Preferred, Value, Fred Meyer, Ralph’s, Food 4 Less, King Soopers, Buena Comida, City Market, Fry’s, QFC, Smith’s, Dillon’s and First Choice.

Of course, the easiest and least expensive way to eat gluten-free is to eat naturally gluten-free foods like rice, fresh fruits & vegetables, fresh meat, and dairy.  Stick to the perimeter of the grocery store and try to avoid the middle aisles as much as possible.  Not only are those items more likely to contain gluten, but they cost more and are usually highly processed.

Review: Trader Joe’s Gluten-Free Organic Corn Chips

Last Updated on March 13, 2023 by the Celiac-Disease.com Staff 3 Comments

For over forty years, I’ve been eating Fritos Corn Chips. I don’t have them every day, every week, or even every month, but I do eat Fritos Scoops several times a year with various party dips. Most corn chips are made with only three ingredients – corn, oil and salt. Most of the products are gluten-free whether they’re labeled that way or not. However, until recently, I’ve never found anything that tasted like Fritos Corn Chips except for the Fritos brand.

On a recent shopping trip at Trader Joe’s, I found a bag of Organic Corn Chips under the Trader Joe’s label. The trusty g* symbol was right on the bag and the ingredients were corn, oil, and salt. For only $1.99 a bag, I had to give the product a try. The photo of the product on the bag looked remarkably like the Fritos Scoops.

Almost a week after I bought the chips, I finally opened them to find out how they tasted. Right away I noticed an odd odor wafting from the bag. Since the product contains nothing but the ingredients noted above, I can’t figure out what the odd smell is. The taste of the product is good and very close to the Fritos brand, but it doesn’t seem to be the exact same product. Fritos Scoops are saltier and they don’t have an odd odor either. The Trader Joe’s chips are also less greasy than Fritos which is a good thing.

It’s very nice that this item is made from organic corn and the price is very reasonable. However, due to the smell, I probably would not purchase the chips again. The only feasible explanation (that I could come up with) regarding the odor was that it was coming from the bag. However, when I took the chips out of the bag and put them in a bowl, the smell was still there. It’s probable that only people with an overactive sense of smell can detect the odd odor.

Trader Joe’s carries a slew of gluten-free products and their ‘no gluten ingredients’ list was updated in early January. Some new items have been added to the list and a few have been removed. The most notable deletion for me was the Chocolate Mousse Collaboration. It was the best ‘no gluten ingredients’ item I’ve ever had from Trader Joe’s and unlike the Trader Joe’s Corn Chips, the decadent treat smelled like chocolate nirvana.

Best Gluten-Free Pasta Value in the Atlanta Area

Last Updated on March 5, 2023 by the Celiac-Disease.com Staff Leave a Comment

Mirko Pasta is a small regional chain that serves budget priced Italian food. We finally made our way up to the Buford, GA location to try out their gluten-free offerings. There is no gluten-free menu, but they offer gluten-free penne pasta and all of their sauces are gluten-free as well.

We arrived at the restaurant for an early dinner as we always try to do when visiting a new place. Until you try a place out, there is no way to know what level of gluten-free service they offer. Ordering during peak hours somewhere you’ve never been before is not the best idea so I avoid doing it when possible.

Our server was knowledgeable about the gluten-free options on the menu, but did have to double check the dressings for me. Since there is no gluten-free menu, I had to ask all the usual questions and mention that my pasta had to be cooked in clean water. Making assumptions about what the staff members know about gluten-free service is one of the best ways to get sick when dining out.

We ordered two half salads – the Caesar (sans croutons) and the baby spinach. The Caesar salad was very good though the dressing wasn’t stellar. The cheese on the salad was some of the best I’ve had in Atlanta. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the almost buttery tasting Parmesan cheese. The spinach salad was absolutely incredible. The quality of the goat cheese was stellar and the golden raisins were a surprising, yet wonderful, addition to the salad. My husband and I agreed that the walnut honey balsamic vinaigrette on the spinach salad was simply divine!

For my entrée, I ordered the gluten-free pasta with carbonara sauce. When the dish was served I knew I’d have left overs because it was a very generous portion. The cream sauce with egg and pancetta was very good and was in fact, the first gluten-free version of the sauce I’ve had. I’m not sure I’d order it again because other sauces look worth trying, but the dish overall was quite tasty.

My only complaint was that some of the pasta was stuck together and as you can imagine, it was not cooked thoroughly. I usually mention that I want the pasta to be very done because very few gluten-free pastas can be prepared al dente. There is done or not done – no in-between. I didn’t mention this to our helpful server, but I will on future visits. The Heartland Pasta the restaurant uses needs to be stirred when cooking or it sticks pretty badly like some of what I was served did. Please note that that brand of pasta is made in a shared facility that processes wheat.

I ended up eating over half my meal (pushing the not cooked enough pasta pieces aside) and took the rest home to enjoy later. Most of the time when you get gluten-free pasta out that is not quite cooked through, heating it in the microwave helps it finish cooking. If you are heating pasta with a cream sauce, heat it up slowly (in twenty second increments, stirring between them) in order to keep the cream for breaking.

We didn’t ask about dessert at Mirko Pasta, but only one item looked like it might be gluten-free. It wasn’t something that appealed to me and I usually don’t care about dessert when eating a heavy meal like pasta anyway. When our bill arrived, my husband almost turned white and quickly summoned the server back to the table. He asked why it said ‘whole wheat penne’ on the check with no mention of gluten-free anything. We were assured that the pasta I’d had was gluten-free though I knew from the taste that it was.

We had two half salads and two entrees and our bill (with tax) was only $24. My pasta was only $7.98 which is less than any other place in or around Atlanta that offers gluten-free pasta. There was no upcharge for the gluten-free pasta. Considering that Wal-Mart sells Heartland gluten-free pasta for $1.99, this is somewhat understandable. Every other place here charges extra for gluten-free pasta with upcharges ranging from $1.50-$4 per dish.

Below is a listing of all Mirko Pasta locations which are all in GA. The restaurant offers a great value and at least in Buford, GA, the staff currently seems to know what they are doing when it comes to serving gluten-free customers. As always, things can change at any venue so we all have to be advocates for ourselves when dining out. The directions and phone numbers of each location can be found here. It’s advisable to call the location near you to make sure they have gluten-free pasta as there is no gluten-free information on the company’s website.

Gluten-Free Options from CHI-CHI’S and La Victoria

Last Updated on March 11, 2023 by the Celiac-Disease.com Staff Leave a Comment

During one of my recent grocery store gluten-free sleuthing trips, I came across a corn cake mix that looked gluten-free, but since I was not aware of the company’s labeling allergen policy, I did not buy it. CHI-CHI’S makes the mix and the company is owned by Hormel whose policy is to list all major allergens including wheat (as required by law). However, the company does not list all forms of gluten on product labels. After checking the extensive Hormel gluten-free product list online, I found out that the CHI-CHI’S Sweet Corn Cake Mix is indeed gluten-free.

Many items in the CHI’CHI’S line are gluten-free and so are many from La Victoria which is also owned by Hormel. I’ve been using La Victoria enchilada sauce for several years now. La Victoria is actually cheaper at our Whole Foods than at Publix. Many ready-made enchilada sauces and sauce mixes still contain gluten. In most product lines that make such items, the gluten ingredient used is wheat which is easy to spot on the label.

Since I was intrigued by the corn cake mix at Publix, I kept checking the labels of various items and was surprised to find that wheat is no longer listed in the enchilada sauce from Old El Paso. However, General Mills owns that product line and presently none of the Old El Paso items are on the Live gluten-freely website which lists all items that the company deems gluten-free. It would be terrific if the sauce eventually made it to the gluten-free product list, but that might not be feasible due to the way the item is processed.

Below is a list of the CHI’CHI’S and La Victoria items that are currently on the Hormel gluten-free product list:

  • CHI-CHI’S® Chips – all varieties
  • CHI-CHI’S® Con Queso
  • CHI-CHI’S® Corn Tortillas

Review: Kinnikinnick Graham Style Crumbs

Last Updated on March 4, 2023 by the Celiac-Disease.com Staff Leave a Comment

Several months ago I had the opportunity to review a gluten-free website. Part of the deal was that I got a gift voucher to use to buy whatever I wanted to from the site. One of the items I chose was graham cracker crumbs from Kinnikinnick called Graham Style Crumbs. When I needed such crumbs in the past, I used cookies and crushed them up myself in a large baggie and rolling pin.

The box of crumbs got pushed behind other things in my crowded (and poorly designed pantry) so I sort of forgot I had them. Finally, just before Christmas I whipped up some lemon bars and used the Kinnikinnick Graham Style Crumbs to make the crust for them. Even though I much prefer using a ginger cookie crumb crust for lemon bars, the graham cracker crumbs made a wonderful tasting crust. One box makes an 8” x 8” sized crust.

When I make my own crumbs using cookies, I don’t get them all crushed to a consistent texture. That method works fine and it’s not like I have half a cookie pressed into the pan, but they are not perfectly even. What I like about the Kinnikinnick product is that the crumbs are very fine as you would expect from a machine made crumb.

It’s simple to make up a crust with the Kinnikinnick crumbs. You just add a little melted butter to them and mix them up.  Then you press the mixture into whatever pan or dish you’re using just as you’d do with a gluten crumb crust. It’s that simple! There are instructions for making a baked or non-baked pie on the box. The crust tastes just like a gluten graham cracker crust and is good enough to fool even the most persnickety gluten eater you know.

In addition to being gluten-free, the Kinnikinnick Graham Style Crumbs are also suitable for people with other allergens as the product is also:

  • Tree Nut-free
  • Peanut-free
  • Dairy-free
  • Corn-free
  • Fish-free
  • Egg-free
  • Casein-free

Below is a list of the ingredients:

When I read the first ingredient on the box – pea starch – and then other ingredients like pea protein and pea fiber, my first thought was that the crumbs would have a grainy, bean flavor to them. Nothing could be farther from the truth. They taste pretty much like crumbs made with Honey Maid graham crackers. At least, they taste like what I remember those gluten crumbs tasting like.

The obvious dessert the Kinnikinnick crumbs will work for is cheesecake which is one dessert I don’t particularly care for. However, when warm weather rolls around this Spring I’m going to use this product to make a crust for this Peanut Butter Chocolate Pie. It is sinfully delicious and all it takes to make it gluten-free is changing the crust. To date, I’ve not been thrilled with any of the gluten-free crusts (all ready-made items) I’ve used to make it. The Kinnikinnick Graham Style Crumbs are just the ticket for that pie and any others that call for a graham cracker crust!
