Safeway’s Gluten-Free Products List

For many parts of the United States, Safeway is the grocery store that is relied upon to purchase groceries at an affordable price. And like most major grocery chains, Safeway will provide a list of gluten-free products they carry if you contact them.

For your reference, here is their current standard email response (reformatted for your convenience), which is provided if you request a list of their gluten-free products (Note: To ensure you have a current and accurate list we recommend you contact Safeway directly):

Safeway’s Gluten-Free Product List

“We received your request for information on Safeway private label products for those troubled with gluten-induced enteropathy or celiac sprue. While we are somewhat familiar with the malabsorption syndrome, we do not presume to prescribe any of our products for any specific diet(s). On the other hand, we are happy to provide what information we have which might be useful to you.

For your information, we have over 5,000 different products in our Safeway private label product line and we do not have a listing of ingredients available for the general public on each of these items so we are not able to comply with all requests. We do suggest that you read carefully all ingredient labeling information on products that you purchase.

We can tell you that our frozen vegetables and fruits should be okay since they do not contain any other ingredients but the vegetables or fruits themselves. The exception to this would be our frozen vegetables in sauce.

Another group of items that would be acceptable is non-breaded seafood items, poultry that has not been breaded or stuffed, and our Lucerne/SELECT eggs. In other words, all fresh meats, seafood, and eggs.

Acceptable dairy items would be all fluid milk, except chocolate milk when starch is added and the source is not listed, cottage cheese, and natural cheeses. Most bakery items we believe would not be acceptable for use in this diet.

We have taken the initiative to solicit all of our suppliers for lists of their products that are gluten-free. This list is attached for your easy reference.

As near as we can determine, the information we’ve provided is correct; however, we cannot guarantee that changes will not occur from time to time in our ingredient listings, or vendor changes that would affect processing methods or raw ingredients therefore we do recommend that you verify ingredients with us from time to time. We do appreciate your interest in our Safeway Brand products and hope that we have been of some help to you.

Wrigley’s and Orbit’s Gluten-Free Gum

Gum is one of those foods that most people really don’t think about whether it is gluten-free or not, because most of them are naturally gluten-free. Recently Erin of gluten-free Fun took the time to contact Wrigley gum and confirm which of their gums are considered gluten-free, so I wanted to pass this information along to our readers.

Here is Wrigley’s official response:

The following is a list of U.S. Wrigley products that remain free of any wheat, oat, rye or barley gluten:

Please note that Altoids Chocolate Dipped mints carry a warning that the product is made on equipment that also processes milk and wheat.

If your sensitivity extends to other types of gluten, several of our brands contain corn syrup, which may have trace amounts of corn gluten in it. The amount of gluten in one stick is less than 0.2 milligrams, but if you are extremely sensitive, you may want to consult with your physician before chewing our brands.

Additionally, no packaging material directly next to our product contains gluten sources. There may be instances when starches are used on the label around each individual stick of gum, but these starches are produced from corn or potatoes, not from wheat, rye, barley, oats, millet or buckwheat.

Low Gluten Bread for Catholic Communions

There has long been a problem for Celiacs who attend a Catholic church, as in keeping with the belief that Jesus used wheaten bread at the Last Supper, the Catholic Church has required that bread used for communion be made with wheat and contain gluten.

So, what is the solution? Apparently, it is a low-gluten altar bread that has 0.01% gluten in it.

According to the Catholic church:

Having reviewed the laboratory reports you sent, which set the amount of gluten in these altar breads at 0.01%, I am pleased to state that these special hosts are indeed made according to the requirements of both the Code of Canon Law (c.924) and the special considerations set out by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, in his July 24, 2003 letter to the Presidents of Episcopal Conferences (Prot. N. 89/78-17498) and may be validly used at Mass in the diocese of the United States with appropriate permission.

This way it meets the Catholic church’s requirement of containing wheat, but according to a huge number of testimonials, it doesn’t seem to cause problems for people with Celiac Disease.

Here is the official response from the Celiac community:

The measurement cited here, 0.01%, represents 10 PPMs (parts per million).  But the more important number is 37 micrograms, because it is daily exposure to gluten that counts.  The best current information shows that 10 milligrams a day should be safe.

Ten milligrams is the same as 10,000 micrograms.  If you divide 37 micrograms into 10,000 micrograms, you will find that you would have to eat 270 wafers every day to reach the danger point.  At most, celiacs would consume one wafer per day or about 0.04% (four tenths of one percent) of the amount considered dangerous.
