Review: UNO’s Chicago Grill Gluten-Free Restaurant Menu

There are a number of great restaurant chains in the United States that offer a gluten-free menu. One of the more popular pizza restaurants within the Celiac community is UNO’s Chicago Grill. Most of their locations throughout the United States offer gluten-free pizzas (cheese or pepperoni), as well as many other gluten-free foods (examples include a gluten-free sundae, a top Sirloin Steak, Chop House Classic, Lemon Basil Salmon, and a Baby and Grilled Mahi-Mahi with Mango Salsa).

When Celiac-Disease.com was created, one of the things we wanted to do was feature restaurant reviews found around the web. One recent review we ran across over at gluten-free Inspired reviewed a recent visit to UNO’s Chicago Grill:

I was apprehensive about ordering the gf pizza, because after 44 years on the gf diet, I still thought, “What if they get the pizzas mixed up and I get one with gluten. I can’t afford to get sick!” I always tell the hostess that I want a gf menu which saves time and works out best from my experience. The hostess whipped out a colorful gf menu. I then explained my apprehension to my waitress. She assured me that the manager would serve my gf pizza, which should dispel my greatest fears! The manager not only served my gf pizza, but he assured me that UNOS has a dedicated corner of their kitchen just for preparing gluten-free meals in order to avoid cross-contamination. That was great news!

Never in my wildest dreams could I envision 44 years ago that you could go into a national chain and order gf pizza and one so reasonable. The cheese pizza was $11.49.

UNO’s Chicago Grill Gluten-Free Menu

Roughly two months ago we wrote about the UNO Chicago Grill restaurant chain releasing a gluten-free pizza at a portion of their restaurants. Well, it appears this experiment was a success, as I’ve seen several reports that gluten-free pizzas are now available at all UNO Chicago Grill restaurant locations!

Here is an excerpt from the release from UNO Chicago Grill:

Recently lauded as America’s Healthiest Chain Restaurant, UNO has added gluten-free cheese and pepperoni pizzas to what is already one of the most extensive gluten-free menus available for a casual dining chain. This is good news to the estimated three million Americans diagnosed with celiac disease, as well as an additional seven million Americans who have a wheat intolerance or allergy and rely on gluten-free foods. While awareness of celiac disease is rising, an estimated 97 percent of those who have it remain undiagnosed.

Guidara explained that it took over a year of research and development to find just the right recipe for a brand that is known for its iconic pizza. “While we want to meet the needs of guests with allergies, we never forget that we are about great taste and choice, and that means developing new dishes that are healthful without sacrificing great flavor.”

UNO Chicago Grill works closely with its Nutrition Advisory Board, which meets quarterly to discuss trends and solutions to improve the quality and nutritional value of its menu. Guidara oversees the Advisory Board and brings his expertise as a member of the Harvard School of Public Health Nutrition Roundtable.

As always, when dining out gluten-free, do your due diligence and make sure the staff understands your needs. There are very few restaurants that are 100% gluten-free, so cross-contamination is always a risk. If you don’t feel comfortable with what you are hearing from the staff, perhaps it is best to dine elsewhere.
