Review: Carrabba’s Italian Grill

Last Updated on March 12, 2023 by the Celiac-Disease.com Staff 1 Comment

It has been a long time since I last ate at Carrabba’s Italian Grill. There is one close to us, but for some reason, I never think about going there. A couple of weeks back I heard that they expanded and updated the gluten-free menu, so I made it a point to go last weekend.

The gluten-free menu is quite extensive with choices that are sure to please just about anyone. There are appetizers, soups, pasta, salads, chicken, fish, and steak options. After changing my mind several times, I finally decided on the Johnny Rocco Salad. The salad is made up of wood-grilled shrimp, scallops, roasted red peppers, olives, ricotta salta, romaine lettuce, and mixed greens tossed in an Italian vinaigrette. I asked them to leave off the ricotta and chose a different dressing since I am also dairy-free in addition to gluten-free.

This salad was out of this world! The shrimp and scallops were plentiful and cooked to perfection. The balsamic vinaigrette went perfectly with the ingredients. This is definitely a salad I would order again.

Carrabba’s Italian Grill has locations across the US. They take their gluten-free menu seriously, consulting lead dietitian, Maria Carafe when designing the gluten-free menu and dishes. I highly recommend giving Carrabba’s a try if you haven’t yet.

Review: Udi’s Florence Street Bakery Bread

Last Updated on March 11, 2023 by the Celiac-Disease.com Staff 5 Comments

I have been eating Udi’s Gluten-Free bread since it was first introduced 5+ years ago. For a while, it was my absolute favorite. It was ground-breaking in the world of gluten-free bread. It was soft with a nice texture and didn’t have to be toasted. A year or two went by and the bread began to have large holes in it that ran throughout the loaf. It was more and more common with each purchase, so I stopped buying the bread and found an alternative, or at least I did for a while. Once I found the commercial-size loaf at Costco, I began to buy my bread there. The holes were still there on occasion, but if I got a bad loaf, I would take it back to Costco to get another. Enter Udi’s Florence Street Bakery Bread.

This Farmhouse White Bread is part of the new Udi’s Florence Street Bakery line, which also includes muffins. The new line is intended to be found in the bakery section of the grocery or health food store as opposed to the frozen food aisle. I found this loaf at Earth Fare but discovered it can also be found in Target and Walmart.

So, how does this bread stack up? The texture and taste are great, there is no doubt about that, but as is typical with Udi’s brand bread, I found some holes in the middle of the loaf.

These slices of bread represent about a third of the loaf of bread. When you are paying $5+ for a loaf of bread, that is unacceptable, in my opinion. I know this isn’t a problem with other gluten-free brands, or at least not that I have seen, so why can’t Udi’s seem to fix the issue?

While I really enjoyed the taste and texture of this bread, I can’t see purchasing it again. Have you tried Udi’s Florence Street Bakery Bread? Did you have holes in your loaf?

Review: Barbara’s Bakery Pumpkin Puffins

Last Updated on June 8, 2024 by the Celiac-Disease.com Staff Leave a Comment

Fall has arrived and it just happens to be my favorite season. I love the cool, crisp sunny days – the ones with the cloudless brilliant blue skies. With the arrival of fall comes all things pumpkin. If you follow a gluten-free diet, this can be depressing because many of the fall pumpkin-flavored foods and beverages are not safe for us to eat. Barbara’s Bakery recently launched its brand new, seasonal Pumpkin Puffins.

The new Pumpkin Puffins are:

  • Gluten-free
  • Vegan
  • Non-GMO Verified
  • Low fat
  • Low sugar
  • Contain real pumpkin

When these arrived on my doorstep on Saturday, I immediately opened the box and grabbed a handful. It didn’t matter that I had just finished breakfast! This cereal tastes like fall. It has a wonderful pumpkin flavor without being overwhelming. I love the other gluten-free Puffins varieties, so I knew these would become a new favorite. Thank you for making an outstanding gluten-free pumpkin product! Look for the new Pumpkin Puffins at the stores listed on this page or online.

Do you like any of the gluten-free Puffins cereals? Are you interested in the new Pumpkin Puffins?
